With all this talk of Rivers & Pools does anyone actually fish the Canal's we have? Rarely see any pleasure anglers on the Worc & Birmingham and even fewer match results. Sections of the canal from Oddingley up look very inviting but are they worth my time? Also do we think the Bread punch would work in the colder months as it always seems to have color throughout the year. Think there is a fairly wide bay Down from Oddingley which looks inviting anyone ever fished here? Cheers All

Re: The Canals............

Hi - used to fish Birmingham - Worcs fairly regularly, mainly for the wild carp in the "5 mile pound section", although recently have switched to rivers. My knowledge of this canal is that there are the usual roach / perch etc, although not in the numbers you get on the Staffs- Worcs canal. However, there are plenty of bream and I used to pick up lots of decent fish when fishing a big piece of bread, hard on the bottom, over liquidised bread on far bank, when fishing for carp. Sometimes bream were a "nuisance" and often caught in 18 inches of water, tight to far bank features and in amongst rushes. This was with 10lb line direct to a size 12 hook, buried in bread for the carp. The bream are rarely fished for and not hook shy. The bay you talk about is very good for bream and I have caught them to ver 4lbs there, fishing caster / worm over ground bait. The canal overall is now rarely fished but there are lots of quality fish in there if you do your homework and seek out the feature pegs. You don' t need to fish usual canal gear with fine lines etc - go a bit heavier and you will find and land some quality fish. Good luck. Mick

Hi Peter, fish the Staffs Worcs canal lots around the Swindon , Greensforge area, it is a very good general fishery, have hooked a jack pike last winter drop shotting ,lost it at the net. So if there's one should be others. As a general course fishery I always used a beefed up match set up.

Fished the swindon area a few times just the back of the mobile homes. Great roach and chub pegs all around this area you can easily put together 10lb of roach on a caster line across and roach and perch down the inside at 3mts. A chop worm caster line across to any feature will normally turn up a chub or two as well. That reminds me time to visit now the boat traffic has died off

Fished the Kidderminster stretch of the Staffs Worcs over the last couple of years and had some fantastic bags of roach and chub ( best nearly 6lb!)

I think the canals are underestimated for the pike potential, any one else have similar views.

Re: The Canals............

I've had pike to double figures from the staffs & worcester, but it's finding them that's the problem. They're not evenly spread along the sections.

The Staffs/Worcs canal has lots of pike, we hook them all the time when fishing club matches and they often take a roach or perch. Kinver, Greensforge, Hinksford on BAA and lots on the Kinver Freeliners water at Gothersley. Seen them well into double figures.
