Fluff chucking on the River Teme

I fished the river Teme at Lindridge on Sunday, but being more of a reservoir fluff chucker I didn't really know how to approach fishing for the brownies. I carefully and gingerly waded in with chest waders, as fishing from the bank seemed impossible with bankside vegetation pretty rampant in the coarse closed season. I spotted a steady hatch of mayfly duns - see attached image - but to my surprise I didn't see a single fish rise to them as they danced and fidgeted to get free of the surface film. Admittedly the river was pretty coloured and running a little up on recent levels, so maybe I was there on the wrong day.
I mostly fished the Czech nymph method as this seemed appropriate under the conditions, in a couple of nice ripples but not a touch all afternoon to my weighted nymphs.
It is certainly on my fishing bucket list to catch and release a lovely wild brownie on a fly from the Teme - I know they are in there as I have caught them and grayling on maggot in the open season but need some advice on fly fishing for them. It was great to be in the water - I just get the feeling I am missing something. Any advice greatly received. And if anyone who knows what they are doing fancies allowing me to tag along, that would be brilliant.
And great to see a bailiff about, to check my membership card, despite me being the only one there.

Your post is an enjoyable read Glen. I used to fly fish, but only stillwaters, only ever tried the river once on the Lugg. Sounds to me as though you got your tactics right really, my guess is that your chances weren't helped by that colour in tthe water. My day on the Lugg was the same, a rising and coloured river where i had one small trout and a tiny grayling. Get back out there Glen, and get some pics up!

Johny - thanks for the response.
I'll try again soon but seems you have to pick your window of opportunity carefully. Hopefully the water will clear later this week but then we'll have more rain by the weekend, so more colour again.
If I get one of those gorgeous wild brownies I'll certainly post a pic on here.
Here's to lady luck!

Re: Fluff chucking on the River Teme

I've had the same problem in the past. The fly life on the Teme is absolutely prolific, not only are there good hatches of mays but olives and the like can come off in clouds as well; just because mays are in the air doesn't mean the trout have switched on to them; I've had days when you can barely move for mayfly but the trout won't take any may pattern I've offered them because they're preoccupied with something else.

Conversely, when they do cotton on, I've had trout hit my fly before it's landed on the water! Keep trying - Teme trout are well worth it; on average 8 - 10oz of hard fighting spotty beauty (with a few lumps around as well - don't go too light on the tippet strength!).

Tight lines!
