I am hoping this Autumn to try some of the places i have not fished for over 20 years or so, and so have a few questions please.
Are there any pegs you can access at both Woodnorton and Eckington?
What are the walks / access like at Charlton, shortest walk looking to be between 4 & 5?
What are the walks access like at Common road and are there any pegs?

Thanks in advance, looking at slower deeper bits of the Avon, iv also thought of Nafford above the weir but ive heard thats a treck and at 60 i need my barrow for my gear now

Re: A little help please ladies and gents

Hi Rick,
I can sympathise with you as I am almost 70 and this old body of mine is finding it harder to negotiate some of the “Challenges” of fishing “Wild Water” as opposed to Commercial Goldfish
bowls.

Having said that, the Commercials have provided the anglers with easy access, which is where the Challenge for the BAA exists.

In the past I have read through the BAA Guide to Waters and for about 50% of them you probably need to drive a 4x4 to get the best out of them.

When I suggested that some of the Stiles should be changed to a more accessible type of passing I was disappointed by the reaction (age comes to us all)

What may be required is a change in the BAA Guide to include a “difficulty rating” that makes the angler aware of what they face to get to the Waterside.

It would also be good to know what can be done to get better access to more of our Waters.

What you should do Rick is send an email to the BAA: baajnw@btinternet.com

I shall send an email to the BAA Secretary with these suggestions and I would also suggest that you and as many as want to, attend the next AGM to ask what can be done to improve access to the Waters that the BAA have access to.

Keep on Fishing

The issue with something like an access rating is that on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being easy and 5 being nearly impossible, I'd rate all our venues a 1, yet some would rate them all a 5! There isn't really a factual way of providing a rating. Cardiac Hill at Knowle is a prime example. That to me is such an easy access venue, yet plenty of people can't physically do it. So short of measuring the length and gradient of the hill it's pretty tough. Pictures and factual descriptions are the best we can do. In answer to the questio, Eckington gets overgrown in summer, but if you're willing to chop or walk through the long stuff there are at least a dozen fairly straight forward pegs to get into. Mythe farm is probably the easiest to get into-a 200 yard walk over a flat grass field sees you fishing at River level. Bredon is easy to walk along again a flat grass field, and whilst there aren't any big climbs, there are some shirt but slippy slopes to navigate. Slippy in winter anyway, not so much now. Pegs have all been rebuilt though so great when you're in. The rest I can't say much about. Penshaw is other venue which had a flat grassy walk, although I haven't been for a few years. The wood section had become overgrown, but has since been visited blithe always hard working maintenance guys, so should be good for a few reasonably accessible pegs.

Hello Reg,

Just a quick comment on the issue of negotiating stiles between fields. I agree that gates would be a lot easier but if the BAA only have the fishing rights we have to rely on the landowner whoever they are to provide the gates. A classic example of this was the recent rebuilding of the fire damaged bridge at Bidford which I believe the work was done by the local council.

Cheers for advice so far, looks like Eckington and Bredon look good as a
starter for 10.
Is the Nafford above weir too much for all the gear, is it more a rucksack and chair?

I think its time BAA looked at getting some new waters, i used to like Cropthorne but that got lost

Hi Rick,
I have just had a look on Google Earth at the Nafford Weir.

I then used the measuring tool in the App to determine what the distance is between the start of Section 1, to the end of Section 4 and it is approximately 3/4 of a mile, so travel light!

In the version of Google Earth that I have when you select the person icon it highlights the roads, and also photos that people have taken, I selected some of them and they gave some good views of the River, I would suggest that you have a look if you can do so.

Access to above weir...park in main car park, walk to house on left, down the side of the house, ignore dogs their fine. Walk through steep meadow and its then all level but not particularly great fishing, groundbaiting would help and fish over a feeder. There are carp there, and believe it or not a catfish has come out. It never gets fished really so who knows? I guess that's what makes fishing so good. Opposite bank is Smiths Angling, so some bait goes in.

Thanks again, i was informed some years ago there are some big chub to be had very close in above the weir, so with cooler weather coming in the walk should be easier, only one way to find out i suppose lol.
A light lead rod or a 14ft float rod set up and bread or meat should make it a lighter first session.
May look at trying to join smithys

I nearly joined Smith's this season, its a good Carp ticket which is not my scene, and the river they control is not as good as BAA imo. But a freindly well run outfit.

Hi Neil,

I thought about joining smiths too

Used to fish above weir when it was Cheltenham waters, looks really nice! But a long trek from the baa side. Think smiths got a car park that side but £100 first year for new members with little river to fish thought better of it!

Not sure if it allows fishing the small weir or run off though,

Roger
