As a new member, this year, I have enjoyed fishing some of the waters I never fished as a member years ago. Uckinghall and mythe pools are beautiful. The mease, the anker also the middle severn. My favourite river has always been the Teme. Fished it today at Broadwas, and was pleasantly suprised. Using roving tactics with link ledgered meat, had first fish a barbel of 6 to 7 pounds,, within 30 minutes of starting. This was my first teme barbel in 30 years at least. To say i was chuffed would be an understatement. Went on to have one more barbel plus 3 nice fin perfect chub all around 3 pounds, also lost two good barbel in snaggy swim. Boy do these teme fish go. Some swims are difficult to access, but that's what you expect, with banks as high as you will see on any local river. Congrats to baa for retaining such wild wonderful places, where you can sometimes fish all day, and not see another angler. Will certianly return to try again soon, just wish I lived a bit more local rather than, in brum. Cheers from Tc.

Re: Teme Heaven

Nice work Tony! I think you have just made my mind up that I want to catch my first River barbel from the teme! Any tips or helpful advice you can offer? with the teme being on my door step I should really give it a bash. Thanks

Re: Teme Heaven

Thanks for your reply. I would start by doing what your name suggests, and pick four or five good looking swims. Then try giving each one maybe an hour and see what response you get. If you live local maybe scout a couple of venues first. Try hair rigged meat with maybe a couple of swan link lead. I spoke to a guy on the Severn some weeks ago and he thought that too much feed, hemp or pellet could spook the fish, especially if they are already there. Just feed a few loose offerings regularly. You will need to fish fairly heavy line, 10lb at least. You will see why when you hook a decent fish in a snaggy swim, which a lot are. Venues try doddenham, broadwas, cotheridge if you can get to it and maybe Stanford bridge. You will catch, just be patient, and wait for that day when everything comes right. Good luck. Tc

Re: Teme Heaven

Teme anglers, the few that still are, tend to keep a bit quit about any success, for obvious reasons, too much pressure on the River when it is trying to recover seems common sense.

Re: Teme Heaven

Great to get a bit of help regarding Barbel as everyone likes to keep everything a secret (i can understand why, i like to keep my catch venues in Ireland hidden away for obvious reasons) so no different. But being more a match/man its time to invest in some Barbel gear, Large net, unhooking matt etc and respect the fish and give it a real good bash next term as its something that I have never been that bothered about until this year & being obsessed with Bream does not help :0

1LC......the mesh of my landing net can currently stand up on its own after the amount of bream I've had lately. Barbel have been somewhat elusive.

Re: Teme Heaven

On this topic what Rods should I be looking at to target the Teme Barbel? Not silly prices but a good rod that will be up to the task? Thanks People.

Re: Teme Heaven

Glad to have stirred some discussion on this subject. To be fair should have kept quiet about my good day but was so chuffed, had to say something. I think the pleasure is not just in actually catching the fish, but finding a tactic, a bait, and also a swim to catch from. This you can only do for yourself, by spending a bit of time and effort. I have found most anglers, I have spoken to on baa venues, very helpful in regard to local info and tactics. The teme is not a one trick pony, may try for grayling and dace on the pin next time. It's just a pleasure to be out on the river. Cheers Tc.

Re: Teme Heaven

The only barbel I've had from the Teme was about six inches long when trotting for dace and grayling - but this is a good sign for the future if there are small ones around. I've seen a few good ones when up at Eastham trout fishing in the close season. I think the Teme is a wonderful river, offering wild and challenging fishing. I just wish there was a bit more access... the West Country Angling Trust have installed metal ladders to get you down to water level at some of their beats, perhaps that's something BAA could consider doing every few hundred yards or so...?

Re: Teme Heaven

Good to hear that people are catching fish on the Teme, as when we (the Fisheries Team) visit the river to work on it we see very few fish.

Re' the suggestion to install metal ladders down to the rivers edge where the banks are steep (which is a lot of the river), this would not be a practical solution as the banks suffer significant erosion every year due to the high floods which are a feature of the Teme. We create/clean up a number of pegs at our Teme locations every year, cutting out steps, cutting back the trees etc, but it is an ongoing battle. We have also been told by anglers on the Teme when we have been working there to leave it wild because that is how they like it. So we cut out a number of pegs, but there is plenty of wild river remaining.

Re: Teme Heaven

Admin, any news when Cotheridge might be actually open to BAA members? It seems silly that someone can just lock a gate and nothing happens.

Re: Teme Heaven

We have spend considerable time and money getting the dumped rubbish removed from Cotheridge and have left the fishery closed to make sure it did not start again. In the mean time the access lane is being blocked by Gypsies who have camped at the bottom of it.

We have the right of access down the access lane to our car park what ever the gypsies might say (it's in our deeds), the issue is being dealt with. I will post a news item on the home page when resolved and the fishery re-opened.

Tony,
I think we met at Broadwas just as you were arriving and I was leaving.Sounds like you had a good day with a couple of barbel and some nice chub.I did pop up before work again last week and had one chub to around 3lb.I did make the effort to walk up to the tree house peg(in between the trees). No fish but did see an otter

Re: Teme Heaven

Hi Tony

Have had fun recently going for a couple of late afternoon to dusk sessions on the Teme. Fish have responded well to a moving bait of casters over a bed of hemp and casters on a stick float. Have had half a dozen barbel (lost 3 bigger fish) up to 5lbs and lots of chub, best at 4lb 10 oz. Teme is on its bones at the moment and the fish can be shoaled up. What really pleased me was that a couple of barbel were between 6oz to 1lb, so fingers crossed that these are 2 of many that may help such a beautiful river replenish its stocks? And a resident otter to boot did not seem to deter the fish from feeding.
