Uckinghall Pool.

I make no apologies for banging on again about the Pool. The Severn peaked at around 7ft above normal earlier today(Sat). If anyone was thinking of going to Uckinghall --forget it. I went down this morning and all but the flood bank end is under water and all platforms are under water.Obviously when the rivers are in flood the obvious place to look to fish are pools and canals. Uckinghall is the exception. When the river rises the pool rises and continues to rise even when the Severn falls and takes an age to return to normal level. I know that the powers that be within the Association are fully aware of the situation but still chose to do nothing. If a similar issue happened at Coppice it would be dealt with pretty damn quickly. The powers that be are aware of what the solution is to prevent continual river water inundating the pool. Someone at HQ needs to take this problem on board and get it sorted. The Association OWN the pool so for gods sake(and hundreds of members who fish this pool) get something done to ensure this problem doesn't keep happening every time the Severn gets more tan 4ft above normal.

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

This seems to be an aggravating issue for you mate, have you considered coming to the monthly meeting or annual AGM to bring up the issue?

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

Yes you are quite right. This issue does aggravate me.Why should I travel over 70 miles to bring up an issue that JW and the bailiffs are well aware of. The Severn has not burst its banks in the Uckinghall area since July 2007 and yet the pool has been regularly full of filthy river water over the last nine years. One senior bailiff I spoke to said after heavy rain the pool will rise, not from the river but ground water run off. Two or three inches extra water is one thing but a few weeks ago the pool was at least 10 feet above normal and only a few feet from the top of the flood bank. Anyone who fishes the pool regularly knows that in recent years the majority of carp have disappeared and have been replaced by Zander and Pike and this year there are large shoals of bleak. The bailiff stated that there is a mesh on the pipe to prevent fish loss into the river and fish entering from the river. I would suggest this mesh is no longer working. To spend over £60,000 on bank renewal seems wasted money when it is regularly under water. To ensure regular fishing for lots of anglers who enjoy the pool and the idyllic location the solution is simple - fix the faulty pipe which allows water to enter the pool from the Severn.

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

I hope the BAA don't mind me chipping in here ahead of an agreed approach but hopefully this will show something is happening behind the scenes. I am just a regular member who often fishes the pool - nothing to do with the working party - I think we have met at Uckinghall in the past - as it drives me made as well we probably discussed it then. I have been in discussion with the BAA on this very issue and being a design engineer with access to civil engineering colleagues, I have offered to help where I can. Currently we have not been able to get to the end of the pipe on the river side as when I last went round there it was below the water level. But it seems the non return flap is either not functioning or has come off completely - I agree there are masses of bleak in the pool now so suspect they came straight in from the pipe. Suffice to say I have put a suggested design on the table which I think will solve the issue (no fee involved by the way - I'm doing this voluntarily) however there are some concerns about it - affecting the adjacent land owner's property. Once the water drops to it's lowest level (probably in August) I hope to have another attempt at checking the pipe on the river side but my honest view is whatever is done needs to be on the pool outlet end so we have easy access - my suggestion involves a one-way flap built into the outlet in the pool. So if I can say something on behalf of the BAA - bear with us and hopefully we can do something to improve matters which won't affect the adjacent land owner and doesn't cost a king's ransom.

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

At last some positive news--hopefully-well done.I can't see any adverse affects to the land owner, quite the reverse. If the pool doesn't continually fill up around their property that can only be good for them. I will await further news.

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

Can't understand this, I've been to uckinghall a couple of times recently and can see no sign of it being flooded, the level is normal, none of the woodwork is under water, it's not even soft underfoot, I went to check it out last night after reading these comments and just can't see where you are coming from, yes the lilies could do with thinning out, but it's far from unfishable, I shall be fishing it over the weekend all being well, tight lines

Re: Uckinghall Pool.

You have been lucky in your "couple" of visits. As I posted, last weekend the river was 7ft above nomal and all the platforms on the pool were underwater. You went on Thurs 23 and it was fishable. If you were a regular you would have known that the pool was still around 1ft above normal even though the river had dropped back to just above summer level. The level in the pool rises very quickly in keeping with the rivers rise but falls back a lot slower than the river. I can assure you the flooding issue is a very real problem.Next time the river is 6 or 7ft above normal take a trip to the pool and see for yourself. Hope you have a good session this weekend.
