Hi all,

Can somebody please point me in the right direction where I can catch my first pike using lures or even dead baiting?

I have tried the Avon at fladbury and bidford last week with no luck. sad

I’m always fishing for barbel and chub, and wanted a little change for once.

I would appreciate if anyone can help me with any recommendations

Thank you smiling

I suggest that you try Wasperton onthe Avon as I am as pestered by them following in the fish that I have as catching. The were also attacking my keepnet! At the end of my session I even had one hanging onto m net!
So give it a go.
Keep on Fishing

The avon is full of them. Some bigguns too if you go down the lower end. You've a good chance of a 20 anywhere below nafford. I've had a few 20s and double figure zander. Pensham is good for Jack's on the lures. I'm sure there are big ones there, but I've only had little ones, although plenty of them. Not as many on the middle severn as there used to be, but again I've had some bigger ones from birds meadow on the lower. I like to take the lure gear to birds meadow also. I generally dead bait on the Avon..

Fladbury is brimming with pike, I don't fish for them, but I've had two on pellets this season, a small, and one about 8 or 9lb. The rest of the Avon is no different, as FC as said. World is your oyster on the WA, Wood Norton, Lower Moor....plenty of other rarely fished spots.

This time of year I'd say just take the lure gear. Theyll swallow dead baits in summer and you can travel light and try a few spots with the lures. I like Big silver spinners and spoons like the Toby.

Cast in a fan shape to cover all the water, I catch most of mine retrieving along the bank rather than out in the middle, certainly in the deeper areas. Pike are lazy so areas away from the flow will hold pike waiting to pounce on passing prey.

Also take a pair of wire cutters just in case (although you shouldn't need them on lures) and extra long forceps (think mine are 30 inch) and have a look on YouTube at how to unhook them if you haven't already. Allow plenty of recovery time in the warmer temps too.

Be sure to brush on your fish handling skills (pike are very delicate), use a wire race and make sure you have the right unhooking tools.
Better still, go with someone who fishes for them regularly.

As mentioned above there are pike in most stretches - the key is to lure fish the slack areas and any cover close to the bank. I always target downstream slacks created by bushes or anything else that interrupts the flow.

If you use strong braid to a decent wire trace you're able to bend hooks out when you snag, which you will if you're fishing in the right spots!

The bit I enjoy is being able to cover lots of water with minimal gear, just remember wire cutters and long pliers or forceps. If you've not 'chinned' a pike before check out videos online, very easy way of holding the fish securely whilst it's unhooked. Crush the barbs on your treble hooks, way easier to deal with any awkward hook-ups.

During warmer periods let the fish rest up fully before release.
