on the river this season. It rains,a lot, river comes up,a lot. Couple of dry days, river drops, one more day and it will be perfect. I make plans to go fishing, rod set up,tackle bag loaded, bait out of the freezer ready for the next day.
Overnight it rains,a lot, river comes up,a lot. No fishing for me,again.
Rods cleaned and put away, reels cleaned, line respooled and put away. Tackle box and bag sorted and put away.
Roll on Summer, sick of bloody rain.

Never give up Baldyman, there are some clonking fish to be caught at this time of year. My personal best R. Severn Barbel & Chub have come as a result of fishing in such cold, wet, muddy & flooded conditions, the same goes for the Perch & Chub that I catch from the Staffy canal too, but then, when its too cold and wet to go shopping with the missus, I'm a free man.

The backend is absolutely the best time to go in my opinion, no-one else about, and fish at their biggest. I will hammer it over the coming weeks until the end.

Hi John

I see in the Angling Times that you've recently caught an awesome Lower Severn Barbel weighing 17lb 12oz in these cold and flooded conditions.
Well done for sticking at it whatever the weather. No wonder you were smiling when the photo was taken, even if you were cold. What a superb fishsmiling

Re: I reckon that's my lot.....

If the the fish kill last June on the Warwickshire Avon hadn't happened I might be tempted to have a go once the river drops a bit and the stinking, black sludge left on the bank dries out. With fish stocks so low,I can't see any pleasure,at the moment, in sitting there, everything covered in mud, waiting for a bite that will more than likely never happen.
Maybe,we won't get any more rain, the river will drop and clear, the banks will dry in the next nineteen days. If this happens(doubtful)I'll venture out deadbaiting for a late season Pike on the LAA water at Wasperton. Either way I'm reasonably happy with my season on a "dead" water, had quite a few very nice Chub,a few Eels and Pike. Oh,and a lot of blanks. As the song says "Things, can only get better",roll on next season with my new pb target speices.

Given the amount of rain we have had its been a good season with some big barbel coming out of the Lower Severn.that 17lb 12oz fish come out at Kempsey on the Kinver stretch, Also had reports of some big fish coming out at Severn Stoke. Lets hope the weather is kind to us between now and the end of season smiling

Rob its a well known fish and has been caught many times before from the Kinver stretch at Kempsey.Perhaps that explains why no one has tried to claim it as a record fish ?

Re: I reckon that's my lot.....

What I find odd about this well known barbel. That has been caught many times in the past that it has even been caught and weighed at some time in the past at 18 lb.

The present record is 16lb 11 ozs why no one has put in a claim for the Severn record, When this 18 lb fish would easily break the present record.
Perhaps because knowing what a easy fish it is to catch and how many times its been caught in the past. The record could keep changing from one day to the next. Lets see if it turns out to be another '' Red Spot''

“Red Spot” shows us all what great fishing is possible on a baa card, hopefully she will still be around for a few years yet, as she is easily identified in photos the fish chasers queue up for pegs the next day!
Perhaps people don’t blab about locations (or claim records) to try stop the trophy hunters.

I think you saying “ knowing what a easy fish it is to catch” is a little bit dismissive of the time and effort some people put in.
Baldyman,
I love my barbel fishing but also enjoy other species, so before the season ends, I’m going to get out and get wet & muddy no doubt!

Hornytoad this fish has been caught a number of times and it has even come out at 18lb. People are aware of where it was caught. So ask your self this question?
Why now has it gone public that such a fish has been caught. When all the other people that have caught it have stayed silent ?

Unless you have been told by JC, how would you know where it was caught?
Your speculating…
If you know it’s been out a number of times and at 18lb,
Clearly nobody has stayed silent!,

err….what question do I need to ask myself!

They haven't Jeff, the previous captor also featured in the Angling Times with it back in October, also winning a Drennan Cup. They also quoted it as caught on the "Lower Severn'' which puts it somewhere between Diglis and Tewkesbury weirs.

If you REALLY want to know the stretch Jeff, drop me a PM on BFW and I'll gladly enlighten you, you've got four days left to catch it, should be easy though, apparently.
