Went this afternoon till dusk, took my Grandson who is only 7 as hes showing interest and i would prefer him to get into the Rivers and learn his watercraft etc.....
How disappointing, stinging nettles up to 5ft tall had to clear a path with a bankstick, could only manage to get to two pegs with him, i was shattered and he was stung to bits stages unsafe, enough to turn him into a commercial angler for the rest of his life, this used to be a lovely venue.
Any works planned?

Re: Nafford

According to the BAA website work plan, there is nothing planned. This is such a shame, as Nafford and also Eckington are such wonderful stretches.
I have been to both 3 times each, this season, and have had to clear pegs. This season I decided to take a machete with me, when fishing these venues. Needless to say, it came in very handy.
It would seem that, looking at contest venues, they are taking priority over pleasure fishing locations. Maybe just my imagination, and not a grumble, as the match-fishing teams probably contribute more financially, than the individuals.
I have nothing but admiration for the bank clearing crew, and would like to add a big thank you, for the clearing they have done recently, at Pensham.

Re: Nafford

As we move in to the Autumn and winter months the stinging nettles will die back smiling
So access should be come more easier.

It has produced some very big barbel in the past wink

The only draw back , It can be a bit of a struggle to get back up the hill and back to where the car is parked sad

Peachy - I've also purchased a machete, invaluable for where I've been fishing lately. Overgrown stretches are generally very quiet though, which means you can get a whole stretch to yourself, which is fine by me. Hard stretch these days though is Nafford.

Hi John
I think it is fair to say it was just as bad back in the 60s we just used our old rod rests to break down the vegetation. It just makes it part of the memorable journey of being a fisherman.
I had to do the same on Sunday when I fished on the Alne.

Keep on Fishing

Re: Nafford

Must be a bit of a dissapointment to all those that were directed to Nafford by our resident .... to catch record breaking barbel only to find a few stingers in their way. I just trample the things, top tip dont wear shorts..angry .but have had some great sport.

Re: Nafford

Onelastcast, i note a sense of sarcasm in your reply, i am well used to a steadfast bankstick to get though nettles etc, i mean at 59 years old and fishing rivers all over the country including getting eaten by mozzys in Scotland.
My point if you re read is having my 7 Year old grandson With me, i wanted somewhere quiet as he didn't feel embarrassed about the odd bad cast, the stingers where twice his height, we did our best but stings on his hands and neck did not make it fun, even after rubbing with doc leaves which worked in his head if nothing else lol.
The chance of a few small chub would have been a bonus, still i suppose its all part of the learning curve
