Old Blokes falling Over

Having recently suffered cracked ribs having been pulled over on wet flagstones by my dog, I am seriously thinking about bankside safety, especially given my advancing years with winter on the way. So - two questions. Firstly, recommendations on good non-slip footwear. Also - does anyone wear buoyancy aids on the bank just in case the worse happens and if so any recommendations on type / spec? Old people seem to fall over all the time and reluctantly, I have come to realise that I am now an oap not a teenager.

Hi Mick

I know what you mean!
Watch out for the platforms in wet/muddy conditions. They can be treacherous, as can some of the banks.
Not too sure about footwear, and can only suggest somethings with studs like football boots.
Personally, if a peg looks too risky safety-wise, I move on to a safer looking one.

A pair of wellies with a good deep tread and room for 2 pairs of socks. I also wear waterproof over trousers to stop rainwater filling them.
Buoyancy aids are a step too far for me and as I have had to drag myself out of the Teme more than once I completely agree with Peachy on leaving dangerous pegs alone especially when there is extra water on. Stay safe guys.

Some very good fishing wellies for sale these days with soles that do not slip easily even when in very muddy conditions. Hanging on to a rope tied to a dog peg etc is useful when accessing steep pegs. I liked the original BAA platform design with a kick board at the end, kept me dry on many occasions when slippery.

Mick,
Recommend the following which are good for 90% of the time. For the other 10% (extreme conditions) I have a set of crampons which I wear as well. If you fish in hiking/walking boots then the crampons are a must in your tackle bag. I fully agree also about the rope and dog spike as mentioned.

Re: Old Blokes falling Over

I'm with Peachy and Temester in the "if it looks iffy/dangerous" move on to a safer peg mindset. Mud can clog treads and build up creating as much grip as a slick tyre on a wet race track.
I know a bloke who slipped into the Trent a few years back with all his winter clothing on and he told me "I was f*cked, the bank was high,I couldn't get out. I went right under,my feet didn't touch the bottom,it was so cold. My clothing was full of water and so heavy,I managed to grab a root that held and screamed for my mate. Fortunately he heard and somehow managed to pull me out. If I'd been alone I wouldn't be here today,I would have died. I really thought I was going to drown."
Stay safe. Tight lines.
