After seeing a post from Re5erv0irReg elsewhere, I've taken the liberty of re-posting my reply here in the hope of some assistance with his original question.
He's not the only one who would be interested in the answer to the question of whether a member is allowed undertake bank side clearance of restrictive growth.
I recently tried the Trent at Handsacre but the pegs seemed to be suffering from a lack of attention which made the fishing unnecessarily difficult. The fact the stretch has a general reputation for being a bit 'hit and miss' probably accounts for my complete blank (that and talent) but it certainly felt a bit neglected.
Many of the swims had overgrown trees or bushes severely impacting the immediate downstream stretch which turned the pegs into 'bays'. It made trotting a float almost impossible unless you were prepared to chuck a Waggler into the strong flow in the middle. Even then, the trot was restricted by the angle towards the imposing growth and I'd be surprised if the general default method here wasn't ledgering as a consequence?
No-one (I think) wants to see bank sides completely cleared of any character but my early experiences as a new member are that the stretches near me in Staffordshire have potential in their own way but generally suffer from a lack of attention? It appears to me all the interest and focus is on everything west/south of Brum?
I too, would be happy to indulge some prudent bank side housekeeping but, like Reg, don't want to fall foul of any local or club restrictions.
Thanks.

Re: Peg Maintenance

It is expected that members are allowed to clear some growth from fishing banks in order that they can get access to a fishery. This would include knocking down annual growth such as grass, brambles, nettles, himalayan balsam etc. (what can be achieved using a bank stick). Members may also remove marginal weed growth from the water, either by hand or with the aid of a rake. However, members must not attempt to cut or remove trees or larger growth under any circumstances.

Thanks John,

Pretty much as anticipated, but the clarity is tremendously helpful.

Re: Peg Maintenance

Hi Philmep
Like You I ventured up to Handsacre in the Summer, I took my Grandson for his first visit to fish a River.
What a disappointment it was.
You have described perfectly in your summary the disgraceful state of the pegs at Handsacre, mirrored by my concerns that I raised earlier about the pegs on the River Teme at Lindridge.

I have attached the recent advice given to us members about fishing beneath Overhanging Trees.
Undeterred
Keep on Fishing
