Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Hello Fellow D’anglers,
As I am old school I rang the office,

I was spoken to courteously, and my Card and my Grandson’s cards arrived in the post today, so a big thank you to the BAA admin team.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Very Tight Lines in 2022

Keep on Fishing

What do you mean by 'ticket' or do you mean 'membership'?

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

I'm also not sure why the BAA wasted the time & cost of posting me a reminder last year?
A free email with a direct link to the renewal site would have worked for me and saved the BAA some money.

Some people might not use emails or if they do might not check them very often.Other people have complained that they haven’t had one in the post!

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

The postage costs on the accounts was many thousands of pounds, I agree with the comment that these costs can be trimmed, and perhaps spent on Otter fencing ? Some ideas are worth considering by the executive without always the need to counter as not being viable. I for the first time used the online renewal, which was excellent, you can print off the acknowledgment and you are good to go. Albeit without the new lock code.

It would seem suggestions often get met with sarcasm or aggressive replies . From what I’ve read .

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

I’m simply stating a couple of facts.I know a fair few older members who never use emails.I’ve also heard complaints that they haven’t had a renewal in the post.Hardly sarcastic or aggressive is it?I agree it would be cheaper and more efficient if it was all done by email,at what point have I said it’s a bad idea or not viable?

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Onelastcast, I am pleased that you have taken time to scrutinise the BAA acounts, however sometimes the figures do not give the full picture.
The amount shown in the accounts is the gross cost of postage. Don 't forget, whilst yes you can apply on-line for membership, it still has to be posted out to you and many members also purchase a guide book which costs more to post than it does to produce!
We also get back £1.50 p&p every time somepone buys a guide on-line, so in reality that income should be "netted" off the postage costs shown in the accounts. If this were to be done then our postage costs would be more than halved.
The cost of postage is very significant and we endevour to kept it to a minimum, however compared to the cost of installing otter proof fencingf it is a mere spit in the ocean.

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

John I didn't scrutinise accounts neither do I wish to, but to be honest the postal charges did seem excessive, and I was merely asking a question if that it might be trimmed given the move to greater use of online communication and renewals within the Association.

I don't know how much an Otter fence would cost to preserve our fish stocks, but it might appear to be money well spent, and perhaps the members might willingly forgo a post office stamp if it were to help fund that cost?

I imagine the net cost of fish , mainly carp, lost to Otter would be a hefty sum, let alone the fishing that is denied to members.

Do you have any idea on the price for installing these fences?

I really don't wish to be awkward and perceived to be trouble, as a fellow member describes me merely concerned regarding the loss of our fishing venues to predation, which although nothing can be done regarding rivers, but ponds can be secured, and are within many clubs now throughout the land.

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Brummy... I take it that stop moaning was directed at me, however losing so many venues to predation is probably reason enough to moan, or at least discuss on here if we can actually protect our stock it seems to me reasonable.

You may not agree, as is your right, as is my right to ask the question.smiling

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Not just aimed at you OLC......although your name does pop up rather frequently on this forum whenever a post turns to chaos and off topic. No wonder there is a very evident lack of contribution by fellow members.........it just isn't worth the hassle. I bet out of the thousands of members there is only 25 max that make any real contribution which in itself is sad.
As for otter fencing our pools.........all 15 of them... Id say you'd be talking tens of thousands of pounds. And who would guarantee success? what about cormorants, goosanders, mink,
Just get your rods out and enjoy it for what it is and be grateful that the cost of posting out your card is covered within your £40 subs.

And as for calling it a ticket, a permit, a card or membership......it doesn't matter.
I bet that bloke cant decide whether its a cob, a roll or a batch!!!!

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Onelastcast,
I was recently speaking to former BAA Executive member Steve Whitton (Droitwich Angling Centre) regarding the installation of an otter proof fence around a new carp lake which he has constructed, and whilst I would not dream of revealing how much it cost him, it frightened me to death.
The engineering involved to do a proper job is very extensive, including installing concrete underneath the fence to prevent the little blighters from excavating under it. Self closing gates with electric locks, the full monty. And this was on a flat level piece of open ground.
To do something similar around Coppice Lake would involve the removal of all or most of the trees and extensive excavation to avoid undermining the dam, which would probably have to be reinforced. I fear that even if it was practical, the cost would run to many tens of thousands of pounds just for that one lake alone.
I would never rule anything out, but even BAA's pockets have a limit

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

True I get aggressive replies, however that is the feature of this place, doesn't happen anywhere else. Think Stew.
I have actually got some figures on approx cost of fencing, say Stubbs.
If we were to buy the materials only, £6,500
labour cost £5,400
Total £11,900
So yes not cheap, and this is based on a 500 m perimeter, which I think is roughly Stubbs.
I am sure with the vast amount of members in the BAA we could reach out and get this costing right down.

Just a thought, play nice xx

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

Here is a simple question ? If people are worried about the cost of postage for either applying or renewing your membership ? Then what is the alternitive ?

Even if you apply or renew your memembership online. Its still has to be posted to you.

So what happens to those members who don't have access to the internet either to apply or renew there membership ?

Do you tell them sorry you cant apply or renew your membership because you dont have access to the internet ? sad

If the present system is not broke, Then why try and fix it ?

Re: Prompt service from the BAA

The savings on just 12 months postage would secure one pond from Otter, its the ponds that are broken if nothing is done.
However if there is a modicum of interest in protecting Carp from Otter, there is a monetary incentive from Angling Trust to do so, but applications have to be in pretty quick, apparently.
