Re: Stacklands

It's the Wye, always a beautiful river to fish. Stacklands is defined by the upstream stretch being shallow with plenty of weed growth the middle is average depth and the bottom section deeper near the footbridge. The Wye is no longer a river you can just turn up and guarantee a Barbel, you have to work at it. Expect long periods of inactivity but there are feeding spells so you need to be alert.
The canoe problem is annoying, but doesn't put the fish off. Stacklands can be a challenge to find, the fishery is tucked away down long country lanes, so sat nav is useful. My suggestion is leave it until after the first few weeks of the season , it can get a bit busy.
Enjoy!

Re: Stacklands

Before we had Stacklands I fished the Caradoc side a few times, and it was great sport, Wye and Usk dt and now 40 quid a day I believe.

The farmer Mr Jones is a character, but very strict on not letting cars in if the ground is wet. Nice enough though, ask him about his father's big salmon he caught back in the 30s.
Caradoc side is deeper upstream section with more flow, it then straightens a bit becoming easier.

The bailiff is a great help, and he once put me on a good double figure Barbel, but it can be hard, I need to fish the Wye again might see you down there atb.

Re: Stacklands

Hi Wozey1

I'm the bailiff for Stacklands. Fishing the Wye at the moment is a challenge, we have a big pollution issue and an algae bloom currently clouding the water. The weed mentioned in previous posts has failed to grow meaning less cover and less natural food. My recommendation would be to fish between 5am and 9am and 5pm and 9pm and I'm sure I don't need to remind you about recovering the fish, if you are lucky enough to catch one, rest it in the flow until its ready, then rest it for a further 5 mins at least before releasing it, we found lots of dead barbel last summer as a result of them not being rested properly after a hard fight.. During the day there are far too many canoes, its too bright and too warm. September through to end of October is our time to shine! More than happy to give you some hints and tips and put you on the fish, I'll give you one now, the Croys look inviting in terms of easy of fishing, you'll have a very relaxing day however, with not much action. Because of the obvious issues with work parties the fishery is overgrown at the moment so you are going to need a bit of jungle warfare to get to a swim, please dont cut any branches down or dig out banks though please. As mentioned Mr. Williams is very strict on where to park, please only park in the designated area, if this is full park outside the fishery. There are Roadworks planned for the end of the month into the start of June where the lane will be closed and the fishery inaccessible, a notice will be put on the website with the dates.

Re: Stacklands

Hi, thanks for the updates, so sad to hear about the Barbel deaths, no excuses the message has been shouted out enough, some must be deaf.
The break in fishing should help, every cloud etc.
And its Mr Williams not Jones got my Welsh names mixed up.ha!
See you down there hopefully later in the year..top man.

Thanks wyeangler can't believe some angler not resting fish when the river is low and warm co levels are low fish take longer to recover may be a good idea on the website to have best care practice it's bad having fish die because of neglected

Re: Stacklands

It happens unfortunately. Low Oxygen levels in the river are making the problem worse thus the recommendation to recover the fish even longer than usual. There are lots and lots of debates about the closed season. My preference would for it to be between May and August, the fish are at their most vulnerable during these months and rarely spawning in cold water in March and April.

Re: Stacklands

A mate an I fished Stacklands last week. Due to breaking my ankle on opening day on another BAA water I had to fish the croft. Have had Chub from there in the past but not a knock all day for either of us. lots of silvers (some big) jumping so might take the fly rod next time.
There were a few canoes but whoever is hiring them out has clearly told them to pass anglers as close to the opposite bank as possible as all did this without fail.
its a lovely setting but was surprised not to see a kingfisher as on all previous visits i have.

Re: Stacklands

Hopefully roadworks completed now. And yes rest the fish before you even take it out for picture not the other way round. Like asking 100mtr runner to just due it again for the camera lol. Rest first pictures later. Wye has not been good in that area fished farther up and full of chub but not many barbel coming out. Still think they are spawning late?? Fish lightewr enjoy the chub and Dace. OHH and the F***ing eels had 5 last week. HATE them

Re: Stacklands

Eels are great news. The otters love them, which means they leave the other fish alone.
