Hello Fellow D’anglers,

Thank you Reg for taking the time to do this.
Parking for canal visits has always been a problem along certain stretches....perhaps why some lengths are so quiet.
The fishing on canals has improved so much over the past 40 odd years. Back then it was gudgeon plus the odd roach or small carp.
Won a junior match once with 100 plus sticklebacks plus a handful of gudgeon.

Hi mrfishy,
Your reply has made my efforts worthwhile, thank you.

As you have quite rightly stated the fishing potential of the Canals is remarkable, and the BAA Card offers us so much potential, BUT it is the getting to the Towpaths that is our biggest challenge!

In my reviewing of various sources to bring the information together when looking at Google Earth I did see that there are Rights of Way that can get you from an adjacent road and across a field and a Bridge to the Towpath, so if you have access to Google Earth then I would recommend that you zoom in on the course of the Canals and look at the potential places to access the canal towpath.

But best of all

Keep on Fishing….

Morning Reg

You've put a lot of hard work into getting this lot down on record for us and I thank you, but I have one small gripe and that is that the marina between Br36 and Br37 isn't Astwood but ASHWOOD.

Now, knowing you as I do, you will be fascinated to know that ASHWOOD marina/wharf was the destination of the very first Steam Engine to go into working service (the Agenora) in the WORLD and played an import part in the building of rail tracks today. The heavier track built to replace the light rails for horse drawn coal bogies before was the template of how rail tracks have been laid ever since and the local's at Pensnett coined the very phrase "Railway" in appreciation of it's innovative design.

Google it and enjoy. I know you will.

Keep on fishing? I'm off to fish at Ashwood again myself shortly. I'm having the day off.

Nice one Reg. smiling

Hi stew1955,
Well thank you for correcting me and enlightening all that read your post!

It is truly amazing, why has it not been broadcast as I had never heard of this important part of our Industrial Revolution!

As for the detailed information on the Bridges and Locks that I have provided on the B-W and S-W Canals then I thank you.

I felt that if I could provide a bit more detail then it might provide the impetus for more of our Members to fish these fantastic waters!

Keep us posted on the results from your trip to “Ashwood Marina”

Keep on Fishing….

Re: Staffs-Worcester Canal Bridge Numbers and Road Names

Hi Reg

I've yet to meet any local living near Ashwood who knows of its industrial history. Sad.

Ashwood Marina itself is out of bounds to us anglers as it is not on the tow path side of the cut but when I fish a few hundred yards below the Greenforge Lock I always refer to it as Ashwood.

I decided to walk upstream from Br37 to fish Hinksford instead of Ashwood today. I'd not fished it since early November last year and I fancied a change of scenery.

Boats every 25 mins on average made for hard day's fishing but it's a lovely spot to spend a day in the Sun (listening to the birds in woods and a frog's mating call) so I didn't mind. It was a Bank Holiday after all so all hale to the fair weather boaters who were very considerate and friendly and the crowds of passers by who kept me company on the tow path, a few of whom stopped off for a chat after seeing me land a fish.

I only managed to catch 8 fish though but they totalled 3lb (av = 6oz per fish) made up of a 12oz perch, a 12oz skimmer, plus smaller perch, two of which were 8oz, a single Roach and a Gudgeon bigger than the roach and the smallest perch put together. As fishing goes it was a below average day but that was purely because of the extra boat traffic, but the majority of the fish that I caught needed the landing net.

The best part of the day perhaps was to sit in the Sun with a pint of Real Ale from the Navigation Inn alongside Greenforge Lock after the long walk back to the car.

Keep fishingsmiling
