Thinking of giving Stubbs a go but no information on the ‘where to fish’ pages.
Hopefully someone will say it’s great for tench with a float!
Has anyone fished it recently and care to share any info? Depths, species and tactics etc
Thanks for any info given

Re: Stubbs pool information please

I've not fished Stubbs for absolutely years, but I think it's mostly carp that come out, though I don't think they're very easy to catch. Some come out on floaters, but again the fish are very cagey and the water is mostly clear.

Check out the pictures on the where to fish page, you'll see they're nearly all of carp.

I've not heard of any tench coming out of Subbs but there may be some in there, my go to for tench is Mythe, though Uckinghall has a decent head also.

Good luck if you do try Stubbs, I think it's quite a tough venue.

Re: Stubbs pool information please

Went to Stubbs a month ago, my first visit there. Not a big size pool, but plenty of pegs, tidy around, sadly there was a true forest underwater - I think in a few weeks the forest will become a jungle and fishing will be .... let's say challenging.
Did not catch anything ( I was spinning for predators), and a fellow angler who came later was kind to share some info - no perch or pike in Stubbs, just carp, but very, very difficult to catch.
Hope this helps.

Needs fencing off, stock evaluation, and would be a great venue for the members. Perhaps one way to pay for the fence etc would be to offer a day ticket or 24 hour ticket ...but of course thats far too radical. Such a waste of venues that could become a viable income stream or just somewhere we can fish?
What a great idea...

Re: Stubbs pool information please - it sounds like it needs an Echo Scan to check what lies beneath, as well as a stock check!

Hi 1LC
Congratulations you have averaged 100 posts per year to date, always one to challenge the workings of the Association, which is not a bad thing.
As a healthy debate is a chance to bring up good ideas that should be put before the Committee for their perusal and decisions.

Perhaps this pool in particular needs to have a boat carry out an Echo sounding to establish what lies beneath.
A Fisheries plan to clear it IF that is what is required.
A stock take by netting or Electro Fishing to establish what is in the pool?

Points to bring up at the next AGM

Keep on Fishing

Hi Reg, thanks, yes I have the scars...
your points are valid, and of course the AGM is the opportunity to bring up such matters to be voted on and so on, but that is a long drawn out process, and given the next AGM is November, and then ..well you know how it works.

The fencing is was discussed in the past, and I made contact with a company who seem to be the most active and approachable, Otter Stop, they gave me a sample quote for fencing Stubbs which I copied to HQ, I never did get any feedback, neither did Otter Stop.

What I remember the cost did see reasonable, but there has to be a lot to consider, Stubbs seems to be now a Carp venue, or was, given the Otter have munched most of the stock, is small in size so fencing would be reasonable in cost and maintenance, its well established and seemingly carp could flourish.

Not really my thing carp fishing, but plenty of members I am sure would be happy to fish a well run venue with a good head of fish. Can't see much point in keeping these venues if there is no stock, the membership is strong in numbers and there must be an army of members willing to help, but unless BAA reach out things will not change.

We can't do much about predation on rivers, but we can protect our pools.

What do you think comrades?

Re: Stubbs pool information please

The last time I fished the river there, there was a car full of the certain locals that have caused problems there previously along with a quad bike. They were racing across the fields doing handbrake turns etc. I fear a fence wouldn’t last long. Shame as I’d had a 5lb chub but I’ve never packed away so quickly…..

Yes agreed the Johnson family are notorious for their colourful lifestyle. So perhaps we should give up these places and concentrate on where we have control? Similar situation with Cotheridge and the traveller site, certainly they don't encourage outsiders....is it any wonder folk complain when planning applications are put in for more sites.
The day they reversed a tipper lorry to the edge of the Teme and dumped its rubbish load into the river was the end for me.
I did however organise a clear up.

Keep meaning to ask why Martin Khul? I am a Bristol City supporter, yes I know, at least not plastic Scouse eh? But Khul had to be one of our worst ever signings, perhaps he was Messi esq for the Blues, not sure, anyway at least we are both safe again, just.
Proper fans Brum , deserve better.smiling

Always liked him. No nonsense player but wouldn’t survive these days as tacking is outlawed. And of course we love playing at Ashton Gate!
