I'm not very mobile at the moment, so I've only been out on the river once so far this season. I fished Arley and was shocked to see no streamer weed (Water Crowsfoot) at all.
Is the rest of the river the same?
I recall a year in the mid 2000s when there was no weed, and wondered whether there had been some sort of herbicide spill - the fishing was terrible for two years after that.

Re: Weed

There's been no weed for a good 3 years now. Pretty much Shrewsbury and below. The wye I believe is the same, and the Avon.. having said that, I have seen just a few small patches returning this year
Very few though.

Re: Weed & the Water Quality Sampling Campaign?

Hi Ken,
This is a good point to raise as you mentioned a “Herbicide”Spill in the first decade.

Will the Water Quality sampling campaign that the BAA are involved with be able to identify IF Herbicides are present now?

I have seen that some of the members are conducting sampling and water temperature checks so it would be good to know if Herbicides can be identified.

If not then it should be!

Keep on Fishing

Re: Weed

The weed was stripped out of the Severn during the huge floods of 2019 - 2020. It has not grown back since.
I believe that the phosphate, herbicide (weed killer, routinely spread on fields in August/Sept to 'speed up ripening of crops') and fertiliser pollution has been the main problem - the river was just about surviving up to 2019. It now no longer has the capacity to regenerate, not helped at all by the insane decision by the government in 2021 to allow sewage discharges throughout the year (and not just in times of high river levels).
The Teme was the dire warning that we have to give our rivers more respect and care - it just took the Severn a little longer to collapse due to its bigger catchment/volume.

Read and weep:

http://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5802/cmselect/cmenvaud/74/re...

For example, Point 21: Data from these monitors has begun to show how raw sewage mixed with rainwater or partially treated sewage is released into rivers hundreds of thousands of times a year.

Re: Weed

I read an article recently regarding the number of hours treatment plants were discharging partialy treated/untreated sewage into our waterways,in I believe 2021. I cannot recall the exact figure but remember working out the total in years. It would take one treatment plant, discharging 24/7,every day, nearly 80 years to match the number.
I realise that the discharge hours are spread over many, many hundreds of treatment plants across the country, but it is still a frightening statistic.

Re: Weed

I stand to be corrected but I believe the sewage discharges are not the cause of the weed loss, it is as mentioned earlier in this thread a combination of the floods and farming produced phosphates.

Re: Weed

Hi Ken,
I can only point you in the direction of the fabulous fishing on the BAA waters on the Upper Severn.

Clean water with Plenty of weed but more importantly plenty of fish!

If you contact the BAA HQ they can get Mike Wood who is the Bailiff for the Upper
Severn to contact you and he can advise you where is best to fish at present!

I hope that this helps you Ken.

Re: Weed

Lots of streamer weed( and all other kind of weed) this year in Avon, between Cleeve Prior and Eckington at least. Surprising, considering the amount of sh*t and agri stuff dumped in the river, especially last year. Definitely improvemet from 2021-2020, but no idea why.
