Re: Wow!!! - Red Signal Crayfish Claws - Not Good!!!

Hi BM,
Thanks for posting the image, which I have identified as belonging to Red Signal Crayfish!

With These creatures in the river, they will no doubt have been the cause of the twitching Quiver Tips and missed bites, that other anglers have been reporting from the BAA Wasperton Waters.

As they are an Alien Species, should the Fisheries Team be setting Traps for them?

They burrow into the banks so they are also a threat to bankside erosion let alone the potential to wipe out fish stocks at time of spawning.

Keep on Fishing

Re: Wow!!!

Signal crayfish are well established in the Barford AA waters just above Wasperton.
As you say they pick at stationary baits and sometimes they hang on when reeled in. I wonder if our eastern european friends friends would like to try them as they eat everything else they take from the waters. Just a thought.

Re: Wow!!!

Reg,have had problems with them eating luncheon meat, cheesepaste, worms and deadbaits. Strangely never retrieved a boilie with the telltale marks on,makes me think they are not giving off a very good scent trail, even the glugged ones.

Re: Wow!!!

Otters find crayfish to be a delectable snack.
Also, it is illegal to set traps without a licence.

Re: Wow!!!

Thanks to Mr Williams
We now Know that Licences are required to Trap these Creatures.

Having looked up on Google it would appear that it is mostly the Mature Adults that come to the traps and it then leads to an increase in the population as the juvenile Crayfish procreate!

But when we Catch one of these Red Signal Crayfish we are to Despatch them Swiftly by Smashing them on the Head!

It is Illegal to Put a Red Signal Crayfish back in the Water!

Keep on Fishing

Re: Wow!!!

Not only do you need a licence from the EA to trap crayfish, you also need....
Permission from the land owner.
Permission from any person leasing said land for grazing etc.
Permission from any club with rights to fish waters on said land.
It is also illegal to use any part of a Crayfish, cooked or raw,for bait when fishing.
According to EA regulations.

Re: Wow!!!

i really don't think trying to trap them is the answer.. they wont do any harm to fish stocks, they are not quick enough to catch a fish, sure they can eat the eggs after spawning but so do all the ducks and birds and other fish for that matter. its the otters and mink and cormorants that are doing the stock no good. not the lobsters.....

Re: Wow!!!

Plenty of laws that can make you kill plenty of things. Just ask geronimo! I don't think it's really feasible to wipe out signals unless someone finds a chemical which is fatal to them but nothing else. I know plenty of fisheries which trap them, and a reduction is all they've achieved. Maybe individual bodies of water could eliminate them, but I don't think it's realistic in river or flowing systems.

Re: Wow!!!

Lol. Killing 1 is pointless. Killing 1000 might have an impact, if you do it every day.

Re: Wow!!!

crayfish tails are lovely to eat...at the bottom of my road is a local park with a big pool , its a very old Victorian boating lake. not used anymore no boats on it and the boating house was demolished years ago...its only used by dog walkers and its free fishing as it belongs to the council....its a nice place to be...but there is thousands of crayfish in there. there have been in there for years we used to catch them when we were kids and that was a very long time ago, buckets full...its never affected the fishing though, it full of fish bream, roach ,perch all the usual silvers really plus some big carp can always be seen on the surface in the summer..granted the crayfish do give you some false bites and you normally swing a couple in during a session but people just chuck them back.....the only down side to the park is goose shit...its all over the footpath every day....
