Hi Gang

Just for a laugh I returned today (29/10/2023), as promised to my fellow D'Anglers in the pub after yesterday's match, to fish the same peg that I fished yesterday during the same time period, the same length of time, the same bait and setup etc..etc.. just to see if the day after a match made any difference and, like a fool, to report back whether the outcome was good or bad. Well here I am with my report.

There was one significant difference in conditions to yesterday, that being that after last night's spell of heavy rain the canal was much more coloured than it had been the day before. The water temp was the same (11.2*C) and the number of boats that went through was about the same too (3 or 4). Leaves on the surface, leaves already on bottom causing a problem when trotting, the Sun's brightness and the wind speed and direction were virtually exactly the same as during yesterday's match.

I did make one slight change to my method though, with so many leaves on the bottom, and for no apparent reason bites being very hard to come by again, I laid on @9 inches, instead of trotting bottom, so with the my No8 bottom shot @9 inches above the hook resting hard on the bottom of the canal, that assisted me to fish a static double maggot bait on my no14 hook to 3lb bottom (Tow Rope) without the hook getting stuck on a leaf every time it got dragged along the bottom.

No ground bait used (I never do use it) and very little loose feed added this time too, no point while bites were so hard to come by anyway, I eventually managed to fool 4 fish into taking my bait, which for me was 2 more than the day before when trotting. How the seasons change things ay?. 64 (+) bites a month ago, and only 4 bites today.

Anyway, It proved to be a very slow, sometimes boring AND tedious day, however, quite interesting too and as promised I have attached a photo to show you the 4 and only fish that I caught today, two of them @ 1hr into the session when I'd first changed to a laying on method, and the other two that I eventually caught some 3 to 4 hrs later (yikes).

Boy, did I need a pint at the Hinksford Arms again aftersmiling

Very interesting report Stew, thanks for sharing. Proves that subtle changes to set ups can make all the difference. And that looks a half decent bream on your pic.

It just goes to show how our hobby is anything but predictable.

Keep on fishing!

Hi John

Thanks for your response.

5lb 6oz of fish there. One of 11oz and another of 1lb 2oz came one after the other @1hr in after starting, then it was a long 3hr wait with the current going back and forth before another of 9oz dipped the float again. The proper Bream of 3lb dead came about another hour after that and that's when I packed in. If I'd stayed on I might have caught more but I'd arranged to meet up with one of the regular Hinksford dog walkers for a pint at the Hinksford Arms and watch the Man Utd v Man City match with him.

Happy Days smiling smiling

Well done Stew .. we could of done with them on saturday ..
fair play to you for fishing the same peg that was a struggle the day before..
was it the amount of people on the bank ,,the water temp.. the lack of boats ..wind and leaves ..who knows ??? but defiantly a different result...
nice catch and great photo
i admire your stamina..

Yes BIN a different result regarding the Weight and Species caught, but a similar result when it came to the Perch not showing again, which is baffling me.confused

I'd never blame foot fall, after all I've caught plenty of fish in the near margin with a family of 4.4 noisy kids and a dog watching over me until I've caught another one for them to witness before their curiosity has been satisfied, and because I fish nearside more often than not I can and do catch fish when a boat is gliding past me.
The Saturday of the weekend before I fished Swindon 41-42 (Botterham) by the pipe. The wtr temp was slightly higher than it was this last weekend but the water was as clear as it was this last Saturday at Hinksford. ONE BIG DIFFERENCE though was that it was an OVERCAST DAY plus very little wind. There were very few leaves on/near the bottom so I was trotting round from boat swim to nearside ledge and I had plenty of Perch (1oz up to 29oz [1lb 13oz]), Roach (1/2oz up to 2oz) plus a 4 dram Gudgeon, none of them put off by 2 maggots attached to a tow rope. Bite rate was slow but I averaged @1lb (+) in the net every hour of the session and ended up with 27 fish in total for a 6lb 9oz weigh in.

I personally think that, just like the conditions for our previous Swindon match, its that combination of Bright Sunshine and clear water that can put the Perch off the feed.smiling

Hi Stew,

You said you would be going back the next day, and true to your word you have.
And what a most comprehensive write up as well, tactics ,water temp etc.
If I had to guess the colour in the water made the difference to the bream feeding.....were they in the swim the day before just eyeing up your bait, or were they more inclined to move up and down the canal length given the colour? Nice catch all the same.
Thank you for taking the time to write up about your trip.

Tight lines for next time

Hi David

I'm always true to my word, however, I did wake up on Sunday morning regretting that I'd made such a bold announcement to all and sundry, but once my first cup of coffee had diluted my alcohol stream and I'd woken up properly, the task that I'd set myself for the day ahead gave me quite a buzz of excitement, purely because I love submitting fishing reports (good or bad) on this forum. I was lucky that my report ended up being relatively good. I'm still baffled though as to why the Perch, big or small, weren't feeding as prolifically as they usually do on both days of the weekend.

Never mind, we've the next match to look forward to now on 11/11/23 and we'll be fishing the BW canal which always has either a weak milky tea or a diluted cream of mushroom soup colour about it (LOL), so water temps allowing, tight lines for each and every one of us would be expected.

Until we meet again maties
