Re: A little help?

You are in the right area to catch barbel, Bewdley to Bridgnorth is all prime water. It's difficult to give advice on where to fish in October because it's a transition period when a lot will depend on water levels and water temperature.

As a start I'd visit the tackle shops in the area and ask for advice, they usually know what is happening on a week to week basis.

If you raise your question again on here a week or two before your visit we can possibly give you a few pointers on the state of things at that time. Sorry I can't be more helpful but things do change quickly with extra water on the river.

Re: Some where new

Arley, Harbour Inn side, I've not fished there for about 3 weeks but I have fished about half a mile down stream and it's been decent. Either barbel have been feeding or some decent roach have been coming out.

River level has dropped back from that extra water we had so bumper day time catches might be a bit of an ask but I'd be surprised if you didn't catch something.

Re: Baiitrunners

11lb 1 oz isn't too shabby at all. Congratulations that's a cracking fish.

Re: hampton loade

I always try to fish to overhanging trees or snags on small rivers but it's not as easy on the middle Severn. The number of swims with trees and decent water depth close in is more limited.

Fishing in the evening definitely helps but matchmen catch plenty of barbel during the day. They tend to fish with lighter hook lengths and smaller hooks. I suspect that with correct feeding the fish can be encouraged to feed in the day but if there is the slightest defect in presentation they will see it and shy away from the hook bait.

In the evening the fish are more confident, they are less likely to spot bad presentation/tackle so more get caught.

The big difference I see between matchmen and most pleasure anglers is feeding the swim. Matchmen make sure bait is going in all the time, not just occasionally. I often see anglers casting a feeder every 20 minutes/half hour. That isn't much bait for a hungry barbel.

The other difference is match anglers often feed one line for barbel then fish a closer line on the float, they keep putting feeder fulls out to the distant line. The fish can get their heads down and feed confidently for maybe a couple of hours before any get caught. The pleasure angler tries to catch fish from the off so when the barbel start to feed one gets caught and the rest spook.

When I used to fish the Teme years ago I used to pile a few pints of hemp into 3 or 4 swims I fancied then leave them alone for a couple of hours to let the fish get their heads down. It's the same principle I suppose.

I'm not denigrating pleasure anglers, that's what I am. I'm just throwing a few idea's out there as food for thought. I'll be interested in any comments.
