The CRT have given us notice of their intended action on our canal network for this coming winter as follows:

I am writing to inform you that the Canal & River Trust will be carrying out electro fishing for the removal of non-native fish species from the canal network this winter.
Our fisheries contractor (MEM Fisheries) will be undertaking the works on our behalf. The works will commence on the Worcester & Birmingham canal starting at Diglis on Monday 16th October and working North. We expect to be working through your club waters on Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th October.
We welcome and encourage representatives of the club to attend and witness these works while they are taking place. This helps greatly to quash any rumours and unfounded accusations.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Carl Nicholls
Fisheries & Angling Technical Specialist

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

I assume they will be removing Zander from the water but it will be interesting to see if they also remove the Carp that are,I believe, classed as invasive in rivers and canals.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS and Carp?

Hi BM,
Our AC has a contest on the B-W Canal on 11/11/23 and I hope that the stretch we shall be fishing is not seriously affected by this action?

Anyway, your question regarding the Carp in Canals!

If you access the C&RT website you will see that the Carp is glorified and the C&RT Fisheries and Angling Manager, Carl Nicholls has a quote in it that says “ Canal Fishing for Carp is a challenge, but potentially highly rewarding”!

So I would think that Carp are not an invasive species, but an established and accepted fish within the network of Canals across the British Isles.

BUT, you never know what might be in the minds of some people?

But I will certainly let you know IF any of the b.a.a. forum d’anglers AC catches a Carp at Stoke Works.

In the meantime

Keep on Fishing…

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

Reg/Baldy...

A minor technicality but Mr W's post said 'non native', which might not mean the same as the word you used 'invasive'. I don't actually know the definition or specific difference, and how long species must have resided in the UK for it to be classed as 'native'?

I always thought that if a human (not fish) was born in the UK, they were 'native' to the UK even if the parents were from another country?

I guess if they did take all the carp out, then it would be a challenge to catch one!

Ironically, the original message has actually caused rumours / speculations by not explicitly naming the species that they will be removing!

Mr JW... You have been given this invite "If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me"

So, for the avoidance of doubt, please ask Carl if he can elaborate on what fish they are hoping to remove?

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

This exercise has been carried out around this time for a number of years now, and is aimed at removing zander only. CRT have repeatedly said that no bream or carp are removed.
Some people have alleged differently, but to date, i've not seen any evidence to substantiate such claims.
The fact that they invite anglers to watch, suggests that they are sincere.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

Mr Williams, thank you for clearing up any confussion.
I read an EA fish survey report on a river (can't remenber where the river was, or which river sadly, but it was in the UK) and in the "removed/invasive/non native list were Carp.Have to admit I was surprised.

And this (and their destruction of the wildlife corridor that was the Droitwich canal) is why I will never give the CRT a penny.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

Hi Ken,
Your last post has caught my attention, as in the past I remember reading about great catches of Bream and Roach being caught from the Droitwich Canal.
So
What did they do or have they done to the Droitwich Canal?

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

They "restored" it.
It was overgrown, weedy and non-navigable.
It was also home to a huge amount of wildlife.
Now it's just another muddy ditch for the weekend admirals.
No doubt fishing has improved, but there's more to waterways than fishing.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS - Non Native Fish

Hello Fellow d’anglers, I have had a look at the C&RT website to read up on what fish they have identified as “Non Native Invasive Species” below I have listed the fish that they have identified and which will be removed from the waters.
Species Name
Bitterling
Catfish - Wels
Goldfish
Grass Carp
Koi Carp
Pumpkinseed
Sunbleach - Motherless Minnow
Sturgeon - Sterlet
Topmouth Gudgeon
Zander

Introduced from Aquarium Owners - Garden Ponds - Commercial Fisheries

So these are what the Electro Fishers are looking for to remove.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

Mr JW...

Thanks for explaining.

Do you know if angling clubs renting canal stretches have any say on whether this activity is carried out or not?

The reason I ask is that there are stretches of local Canals such as the Grand Union at Hatton etc, where 20 years ago the clubs that rented them asked members not to put zander back.

These days, some of those waters are rented by predator angling clubs, often because of the high numbers of zander, so you can imagine a conflict of interests...

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

I can only speak for BAA canals and I can confirm that the BAA are neither consulted with nor even asked about this operation. We are simply told that it will happen. I believe that the removal is carried out on Worcester, Fazelely and Coventry canals, however there may be other canals treated which are not BAA controlled. This question should really be directed towards CRT.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

In regards to the removal of fish other than Zander there was a video a couple of years back at diglis basin that clearly showed other fish being removed. It made the local news. If the zapping is anything like the last couple of years then the fishing will be dead for weeks after.

Re: ELECTRO FISHING CANALS

When they electrofish the waters they are not the same for months after, as this process affects the silver fish too, the gulls have a field day.

When I took a fishfinder down on the Birmingham Fazeley I was shocked by the lack of fish in areas where I had caught previously.

The Zander should be left alone to munch on the crayfish which are a real threat to our canals.
