Re: Holt fleet

Not fished it for a few years now. It did produce a couple of very big barbel last year and ive known it produce some big bags of bream. Last time I fished it I kept losing end tackle to zander. Also some big carp and used to be a resident ghosty in the lock cutting off the end of the island.

Not sure what the parking is now dont think you can park along the lane to the cottages anymore as there was a problem a few years back. Have heard you can park by the bridge but have to pay be good if someone can confirm this and the parking for holt fleet

Re: Holt fleet

I have fished the island at Holt Fleet a quite few times in the last 6 or 7 of seasons and had good sport with some large perch close in on the stick float and some good sized Barbel on a meat feeder.
Last year I drove up to the lock cottage and some one has put up signs on the lane saying no parking and now you have to park down by the bridge and pay the camp site owner to park.

Also the car park is behind a large hedge right outside the campsite, Is your car safe ?? I would not trust it. The last time I went, there were people fishing on the day ticket water by the bridge they were drinking and smoking a lot of weed, you could smell it miles away and they were a "bit loud" . Would I want to walk away and leave my car all day, I don't think so

There is no signs to say how you pay or when someone is available to take your money, if you are a bit older like myself that is a fair treck up to the locks with all of you gear.

Needless to say its one place I wont be visiting any more, shame it s a good water, lots of quality fishing, plus no visitors are allowed on the island to disturb you.

I agree with your views on the parking - I have had similar experiences. You park up and then the lad comes onto the island to ask for your money - the first time I didn't have any money with me so didn't pay. It costs £5 to park there, which I resent as I have already paid for my fishing - interestingly if you fish the farmer's own stretch he only charges £3 to fish which includes parking! So feels like extortion to me. Shame as it is a good fishery, and if I go now I get someone to drop me down there and pick me up but I don't live far away - that won't work for most. Not much the BAA can do I guess.

Re: Holt fleet

I agree, extortion. I think its a ruse by the locals to drive us away so they can take control, I have fished Holt fleet since I was 8 or 9, often camping on the site next door, My first Barbel was caught at holt fleet all those years ago when I was 9.

I remember years ago, the BAA stretch was from the bridge to the rocks by dead water to the lock, (there were no landing stages then). The Island was a day ticket water, obtained from the lock keeper, then the BAA water continued from above the lock dead water for a couple of fields.

It would be a shame to lose the water through lack of use, but interesting to see if the parking ban on the lane would be lifted if the locals own the fishing rights to the island

Re: Holt fleet

you dont have to pay to park at holt...there is 2 or 3 patches of grass opp the houses...drive down the side of the caravan park along the fence...you can turn car around nr the lock....i used small hook 4lb line with maggot ground bait feeder...theres lots of sliver fish there i had a nice bream and decent chub...after about 1hour casting the same spot you see a massive shadow following your bait and lots of fish....pellets are a bit slow there and no one seems to be catching on them....its full of pike and they are very lively ,freeline a spratt and it wont last long, also they will take your feeder catches if you dont reel them in quick,,great pike sport there...and where theres that many pike theres lots of other fish as thats why the pike are there in full force
