Yesterday I walked all the way from Blackpole to Stoke Prior. The stretch from Tibberton to Hanbury wharf, well what a lovely stretch it is. I am on a mission to find some canal carp and I am not fussed about size i just like the thought of finding wild ones. I have been told that their is a few sightings by the Eagle and Sun and that is the same stretch that goes for miles backs tibberton.

I saw several large shoals of silver fish some close to a foot long at Dunhampstead if that interests any locals.

I know that their is a good few in the Stoke Prior section but there was at least 15 people fishing it when i strolled past and i want to find a more secluded spot.

Does anyone have any experience or stories of fishing a long that section or at Blackpole or any other places around this area.

Many Thanks Ben

It's been a few years since I fished the worc canal but my experience was that there were carp on all the stretches I fished and I should think they're still around. Blackpole, pershoreroad, oddingley, tibberton,Shernal green,Hamburg wharf and stoke prior,
good luck.

Agree with Stew, think they're present in most stretches of the B'ham/Worcs. I've found them present especially where there's reeds on the far bank, fish to a gap in the reeds or right on the edge of them.

Never tried it myself, but a common tactic years ago used to be to cast a freelined crust of bread deliberately into the reeds. Then shake the line so the crust drops onto the surface. Also catapult a few free offerings over too.

Reckon you'd need pretty strong tackle for this method, but can understand how it would work.

Good luck mate!

Yeah a lot of the stretches were quite snaggy so don't be frightened to fish heavy, most of my experience was using long pole to the far bank with casters and hemp.

Meatman, that is exactly how i have caught on the stoke stretch, using a large bread band, having it dangle over the reeds also allows you to control depth if your bread eventually sinks. However doesn't feel the best 'bullying' them out of the reeds when you catch.

I will have to have a few more strolls on the evenings and throw some free offerings in at some memorable spots.

All previous comments useful - agree that carp pretty well established, especially along the five mile pound south of Astwood Lock. Many of the carp are very long and quite thin and rumour has it that they may originate from wild carp stocks, although not totally sure. Comment on reeds is accurate, but you don't have to cast right amongst the reeds to catch. My tactic is to try and spot a few fish in amongst and by the reeds, watch for movement in and among them. Then feed a couple of balls of liquidised bread tight to the reeds but just in clear water in front of them, on the shelf before the water deepens, to draw fish out. Then a big gob of bread on a barbless 12 hook, direct to 10lb line, fished on bottom underneath a short waggler. Deadly - if fish are around they will find your bait and you have a decent chance of getting them out into open water as this is where you actually hook them.

Re: Birmingham Worcs Canal

Some good advice there lads ...I personally don’t fish for carp I’m more of a pole and silvers fish Angler, however last year I did a lot of fishing at the eagle and sun ,, hanbury warf,, for the large head of skimmers found round there....one day I was fishing literally on the pub car park and having lots of success.....when I finished I wrapped up and walked up under the bridge and passed the droitwitch junction and if anyone knows this section you will know the far side is reeds solid all the way up passed the public rubbish plant ......I bumped into two bloke who were carp fishing and also having good success they were both fishing a small lead or link , not in the reeds but what I’d call the far shelf about 2 foot short of the reeds , and they were using pellets and corn ...the one bloke had one while I was chatting about 4 pound......he said he was just giving it a go for a change , as he lives down the road by the boat and railway bridge 42 at Stoke works.....he normally fished the same method outside the factory centre in front of the Harris brush factory and has great days sport....like I said , not my cup of tea so I haven’t gave it a go ....but to be fair he seemed to know what he was on about and knew the area very well....so maybe worth a look ......hope you do well.......stay safe all.....
