The BAA always wanted a lake at Manor, they have one now.

Re: New lake

Anyone fishing? Looks perfect for the "you can only catch Barbel when the rivers well up and colour in the water" brigade.

Re: New lake

Does that rule apply to lake fishing?
One expert has already complained he canot pop his meat into his usual hole.
Another one said he is looking for some where dry to fish?

Re: New lake

Hi Lads

It goes without saying that the lake will have been restocked with extra Gold Fish this week, free gratis from the upstream Sewage Treatment Works with the EA's blessing.
Burst river banks, high winds and the thought of all that extra untreated sewage being dumped upstream of my favourite Danery peg, so far, has put me off the idea of a day Barbel & Chub fishing by the Severn this winter.
I'm lucky that I live near to some cleaner canal venues for my pleasure fishing instead.
Some of you aren't that lucky and I do feel for you.smiling

Re: New lake

That is a good idea. Some years ago I used to fish the Union canal a lot ( in the Warwick area) when the upper Avon was out of sorts and there used to be some good roach/hybrids/ bream/perch and common carp. That was before the Mink, Cormorants and Zander found them, I have no idea what it is like now, maybe I should give it a go. Hardly ever see anybody fishing it?

Re: New lake

Hi Stew - Mick from the D"Anglers. I was a lone fisherman on the SW canal today at Kinver, by the Vine pub. Three hours fishing maggot / pinkies over a bit of loose feed and odd ball of dark ground bait. One bite for a micro perch which fell off, so a blank. Enjoy reading about your canal exploits. Need you to show me how to catch a few fish in winter!

Re: New lake

Hello fellow d’anglers,
It will be interesting to see what fish are where following this extensive flooding!

As for the pursuit of fish from our Canals, all that I can suggest is that you take a look at the Canal & River Trust website as there is a very useful Weekly report on the Contests held on Canals, Rivers and Pools that is provided by Steve Cope.
Wherever possible the successful bait and methods are also mentioned.

One paragraph that jumped from the page of the current book that I am reading “How We Fish” by John Bailey and Paul Whitehouse that does have relevance to fish feeding or not, was the direction of the prevailing wind!

Northerly Wind blowing, fishing likely to be poor.
Easterly Wind blowing, fishing likely to be dreadful, the colder the worse!
Westerly Wind blowing, good fishing.
Southerly Wind blowing, good fishing.

For me,
At the end of every fishing session, net dry or wet, just being on the waterside is an absolute pleasure and a privilege that I hope to keep doing for as long as I am able to.

Keep on Fishing…

Re: New lake

As you say Reg it will be interesting to find the fish when the floods abate. Even the lower canal at Warwick was flooded, now the Avon is emptying the Severn is going to be dreadfull. Thanks for the CRT info. The nearest BAA pond to me is Coppice how does that usually perform in normal conditions?

Hi Whatnow,
If you click on Where To Fish feature on the Menu Bar, then click on Pools, then click on Coppice then click on Image Gallery for Coppice Pool.

Also try using the Search feature on the Menu Bar.
Type in Coppice Pool and it will bring up all of the references posted in the Forums for Coppice Pool.

Also in the Home Page Pictures of the Week, there may be some pictures of Bream and Carp caught in Coppice.

Keep on Fishing…

Re: New lake

Well, the Avon has gone down nicely and looks fishable. The only problem being that the banks are covered in a layer of smelly, extremely slippery silt making access to the water/platforms a tad hazardous.
The Grand Union is not looking good, apart from towpaths looking like paddy fields the water, where I have veiwed it,and probably well beyond, from above the Fosse Way to below Budbroke industrial esate in Warwick,is heavilly coloured with red clay run off with visibility less than two inches.
Saw two Otters on my local pool(College Pool @ Wasperton,LAA water) on Friday Dec 29th and found chewed fish remains and a Bream around a pound with bite marks on it barely alive in the margin on Sunday Dec 31st.
The chances of me getting out fishing anytime soon are looking pretty slim, hopefully a spell of dry weather will dry the river banks up and make it safer to approach the water. Until then I'm just planning my close season/next season campaign for a fish I haven't targeted seriously for over two decades. A new pb is the aim, difficult but not impossible.
The wind while fishing. The only time I consider wind direction when fishing is when choosing a peg. Will it be in my face all day(not pleasant in colder weather),can I find a wind break on the other bank,is it from behind/from left or right, will I need my brolly as a wind break?
