Retreat Farm - masses of tiny carp

Fished at retreat farm on Sunday for a few hours but the lake is full of tiny commons and mirrors about 2in long. Absolutely hoards of them attacking any bait and eventually consuming everything like tiny piranhas. This seems great news, as they'll be plenty of stock in there for years to come, but I have never seen so many carp of that size in any lake before. So I wonder if it is a good thing. I can't see how that lake can support that volume of fish once they grow a bit bigger and it will make fishing for the bigger fish even more of a nightmare next year when they are say half a pound to a pound. I guess the predators will take their toll but surely it shouldn't be left like it is.
So, I whilst I know the EA have all kinds of rules about transferring fish between lakes, is it worth getting a permit or whatever from the EA to net some of them out to stock other BAA pools in desperate need of more fish, like Uckinghall for instance?
Maybe it isn't that simple - I'm sure someone will know the rules and if this is possible, but it would seem that transferring fish might solve a couple of problems at minimal cost, as I'm sure buying carp isn't cheap.

Like you Geln, I also don't know the extent of the rules and process for transferring fish. But that's a seemingly sensible shout.

A lake will only be able to support a certain biomass, which means 1 of 2 things

1. The fish won't grow
2. The hoards of tiny fish will eventually become a smaller head of bigger fish, and the majority won't survive.

I've also no idea how long it will take for these fish to get to a size that they will provide good sport, say 3lb, and the likely survival rate if they were moved. These may affect how realistic it would be to move them, but i think most of our pools could benefit from a few going in. Not that i know first hand as I've never fished any of them, but going off reports/forum posts...

Doesn't seem impossible but will need some impetus from the BAA to make it happen:http://www.gov.uk/guidance/permission-to-move-live-fish-to-or-from-...
Looks like they would need a sample to have a 'fish health check' first and a 'site permit'.

I reckon it would be pretty feasible to net around 500 carp from there at the moment. Every time you dropped a bit of bread in there were at least 50 of them on it in seconds.

But still waiting for a response to my last post on here - so not holding my breath.

the tiny carp were in the pool last year too,I suggested the unstocked pool at retreat might benefit a few of these tiddlers, agreed anyway this situation should be managed and various baa venues should be considered for a boost to stocks! as the decline to fish stocks seems to be on the downward trend sad

Re: Retreat Farm - masses of tiny carp

Yes, I remember them attacking my float !! Went a month ago and didn`t see one. Seem to have disappeared and re appeared. Has anyone seen this quantity of fry else where ?? I haven`t.
Another group of fish which hasn`t been mentioned on here was the appearance of a load about 10 inches long. This was last July/August (may have been the year before, I haven`t got my diary at the moment). Went at the end of August and caught 42 fish, 35 as mentioned, 7 bigger ones, at the time they were about 7lb. All the same size, appeared to be straight from a fish farm, all fin perfect and easy to catch, in fact a nuisance !! Fished floating bread to get away from them. Others I have seen at the pool have mentioned these. Went again a few weeks later and had just 1 of these plus a few bigger ones. Phoned BAA for info on these. No useful comments. - "You know as much as me" "You know the pools have been drained" "They are still there, you aren`t catching them as it`s colder" (I was in just a shirt it was that warm).
So who put them in and who took them out ?? Been suggested by one I spoke to they had been stocked into the wrong pool and later reclaimed. Same question for the re appearing fry.
Any ideas on the disappearing / re appearing fish. Be interesting to see if the fry remain here and start getting caught when a bit bigger !!
Still don`t believe in the flood theory, nor the otter theory !!

The only reason you don't believe "the otter theory" is because you clearly weren't there to see the scales of dozens of fish all over the bank.
I'm more interested that you actually seem to be catching, though. How many of the bigger fish did you see/catch?
