Many thanks.

Much appreciated.

Re: CLOSE SEASON

I wouldn't be surprised if the close season is now seen by the angling powers as a convenient concession which 'proves' angling and anglers are conservation friendly? Removing it, would give the anti-angling brigade perfect ammunition?
That said, I agree with Stew83mul that the accepted reasoning as a protection for spawning and the reproduction cycle of other water-based wildlife - means you'd expect it to naturally extend to canals and still waters too.
The fact it doesn't is the perfect, perhaps unspoken compromise? No one wants to raise the issue of the close season's genuine benefits to our rivers just in case it highlights an inconsistency with canals and still waters that our detractors would want to challenge?
Just a thought, but perhaps I'm just a cynic!

Canals during close season

Are all BAA canal stretches available to fish during the close season or are there any that are off limits during this period?
The Canal & River Trust website refers to some of their own stretches being part of the closure when in the vicinity of a river confluence or when designated as a nature conservation area. I'm not sure how far confluence status might extend on a canal (locks?) nor aware of any conservation considerations, so are any of our stretches affected in this way or do we have a clear run on all canal sites at this time?

Re: Peg Maintenance

Thanks John,

Pretty much as anticipated, but the clarity is tremendously helpful.

Peg Maintenance

After seeing a post from Re5erv0irReg elsewhere, I've taken the liberty of re-posting my reply here in the hope of some assistance with his original question.
He's not the only one who would be interested in the answer to the question of whether a member is allowed undertake bank side clearance of restrictive growth.
I recently tried the Trent at Handsacre but the pegs seemed to be suffering from a lack of attention which made the fishing unnecessarily difficult. The fact the stretch has a general reputation for being a bit 'hit and miss' probably accounts for my complete blank (that and talent) but it certainly felt a bit neglected.
Many of the swims had overgrown trees or bushes severely impacting the immediate downstream stretch which turned the pegs into 'bays'. It made trotting a float almost impossible unless you were prepared to chuck a Waggler into the strong flow in the middle. Even then, the trot was restricted by the angle towards the imposing growth and I'd be surprised if the general default method here wasn't ledgering as a consequence?
No-one (I think) wants to see bank sides completely cleared of any character but my early experiences as a new member are that the stretches near me in Staffordshire have potential in their own way but generally suffer from a lack of attention? It appears to me all the interest and focus is on everything west/south of Brum?
I too, would be happy to indulge some prudent bank side housekeeping but, like Reg, don't want to fall foul of any local or club restrictions.
Thanks.
