Re: I reckon that's my lot.....

Hi John

I see in the Angling Times that you've recently caught an awesome Lower Severn Barbel weighing 17lb 12oz in these cold and flooded conditions.
Well done for sticking at it whatever the weather. No wonder you were smiling when the photo was taken, even if you were cold. What a superb fishsmiling

Re: I reckon that's my lot.....

Never give up Baldyman, there are some clonking fish to be caught at this time of year. My personal best R. Severn Barbel & Chub have come as a result of fishing in such cold, wet, muddy & flooded conditions, the same goes for the Perch & Chub that I catch from the Staffy canal too, but then, when its too cold and wet to go shopping with the missus, I'm a free man.

Re: Roach fishing - Staffs-Worcs Canal

Hi again

To anyone who has been struggling with SW Canal fishing this winter, especially Mick Grove who started this link in the first place, may I recommend an article that Reg led me to on the C&RT website. Search "Graeme Pierson, Watermill Bridge".
Its a damn good read. Unfortunately the Watermill Bridge section is unproductive at the moment but the info is relevant to any Staffy section where fish stocks have not been affected by C&RT works, boat traffic allowing of course.

I would like to say a special thank you too to Yorkie for his interesting observations and contributions to this link.

Every Lidl helps.

Re: Roach fishing - Staffs-Worcs Canal

Hi Yorkie

BIN told me that he'd fished a contest on the Br12-13 section a while back, by the scrap yard. A bailiff of the adjacent R. Stour asked them what they were doing fishing there. They volunteered to show him their BAA Permits, which he wasn't interested in. He explained that that particular section had been drained so many times recently that it was now devoid of any quality fish.
No one weighed at the end of the match. One bloke had caught a single razor roach, but BIN's 2 razor roach made him the obvious winner and there was no need for the scales.
In the mean time, famous last words of mine being " I never fail to get a series of bites from roach along the near ledge at dusk (at Ashwood)" didn't apply to yesterdays session. Had it not been for a 2.1/2 lb chub that I caught from the boat swim just 10 minutes into the session, I'd have blanked. There was no chance of catching any more chub next cast either because a boat went through. The locks opened a few times after that and the chance of more chub coming was lost. No bites at all along the near shelf at dusk either this time. No chunky perch, no dog roach Doh! The water temp was only 4*C though, and probably dropping. That's fishingsmiling

Re: Roach fishing - Staffs-Worcs Canal

Sorry Stew, I've just reread your reply sober. I thought at first that you were thinking that I was fishing in shallow water at Ashwood (for example) where only 1.5mtrs out from the tow path there is still a good 3ft (+) depth of water (it was dredged 2 or 3 years ago) so is quite deep along the near shelf.
I now understand that you were talking about the Kiddy to Stourport section as requested and I thank you for your advicesmiling
