Re: Paddle boarders

I find some water users very worrying , they seem to have no knowledge of rivers or the potential dangers, let alone the legalities of river use. One father had three of his children in a canoe on high water and did not have a clue. Two kyackers came through last week and did not even know which river they were on, never mind it being unnavigable. Two canoeists came down today, no licences, no insurance, I pointed out to them the river was very high and dangerous. The female had all ready realised they could easily be in danger but was just following the man. There seems to be a complete lack of education for the river users, even without a language barrier. Perhaps they should put up a notice at Barford weirs recalling the 3 boat users tragically drowned since 1969.

Re: Paddle boarders

The river Avon is navigable from the Avon lock to Alveston weir (approx 1mile) above Stratford upon Avon and comes under the bylaws of the Avon Navigation Trust. We have so far successfully fought them from making the upper Avon navigable. The bylaws make it compulsory for any powered or unpowered craft to be licensed and insured (third party liability), this includes row boats, canoes, kayaks & paddleboards. They can be licensed directly with the A.N.T. and must have proof of insurance. Canoes can be licensed and insured with the British Canoeing Organisation. These bylaws apply to the Navigable River Avon.

Re: Warwickshire Avon

Well done Bazpeck, (thank you for leading the posts) you have had a positive result, I am still waiting for an incident number from the morning of the 13th. The best we can do now, I suppose, is to look forward to the future by improving the river habitat for fish and keeping an eye out for any obvious local pollution and reporting it immediately. I am guilty in the past of seeing brown foam drifting down the river and not reporting it, I will from now on.

Re: Warwickshire Avon

Probaly explains why I never found a thermocline after several years and numerous hours of sounding out so called still water but definitely finding the depth of the upper and lower layers. I have never claimed to be an expert on the 2 plus miles often trod by B/man but have seen the Black look that he has often remarked on. Undoubtedly caused by some muck going in the river. In the past I have seen it at Leek Wootton near the mill, Guys Cliffe, Portobellow Mill and at the Hopyards but never above Saxon mill, Pottertons, Tesco, Myton road or Leafields Stratford Wreck, Lucy's mill, Luddington, Hillfields or Bidford.Which seems to me to back up Stews observations that it seems to be local.

Re: Warwickshire Avon

Some very interesting info from Stew. I have not done any chemical testing of the river apart from helping B/man the one evening and testing some surface water at 3 loctaions for our own personal interest. The river water as B/man says is a lot more clear and the vegatation is growing like mad. I have done some 'dipping' of the water one evening towards the end of June which consisted of me pushing a plastic pop bottle into deeper water using my 8 metre aluminium window pole. The deeper samples were more discoloured than the surface water , unfortunately I did not measure the temperature, as at the time I could not find my fishing thermometer. When I used to fish the Gravel pits/lakes and ponds I would often try to find where the Thermocline was ( that being the 'join' between upper and lower water layers. This would tilt depending which way the wind was blowing and in theory could indicate where the fish might be feeding. A Themocline effect does happen on rivers but is more difficult to pin down for obvious reasons.
Oh and B/man do not mention trees as the Forum police might Zap the thread!
