Re: Warwickshire Avon

The Barford river Avon fish kill thread had over 6000 reads, did not see it today but on the 27thJune it disappeared in the morning then returned later on? The River water top layer had become clearer in the last week and it has taken me a while to comprehend the Black look the water( that B/man has noticed over a long time) has suffered. No matter the amount of sunlight or cloud colours the water has had this dead, black look, I can compare it very readily to a piece of clear glass lying on my black slate hearth. I am going to guess that clear, cleaner warmer water was sliding over a denser, dirty water ( higher specific gravity?). River water can do the same as it flows into the sea. Just my unqualified, unscientific thoughts but if we have a violent Summer storm those water layers are going to be mixed up, adding to the oxygen depletion.

Re: Giant Hogweed - Be Careful they can cause life changing injuries to exposed skin and eyesight

Reg is right Giant Hogweed is a real menace as 2 of my cousins found out ( when in their teens)after cutting down a load to clear a trout stream. The sap is phototoxic and the skin can be problematic for some years. Native Hogweed on the hand can in part be eaten. The attached photos ( I am no eggspurt) look more like the size of the native variety. A similiar plant I have identified at Manor is Hemlock which has similarities and is poisonous, water hemlock is the most poisonous native plant in the UK.

Re: Rubbish

Thoughtless 'me ism', a sign of our times. I cleared up 7 black bin bags of small rubbish at Manor Farm 2 years ago, a lot of it was alcohol related items and not just from anglers. I am glad to say the situation improved greatly after that clear up.

River Avon 09/07/23

As far as I know the Royal Leamington Spa canoe club is still holding the 2023 'Doggy Paddle' on Sunday the 9th July between Warwick and Stratford upon Avon. This an annual event that raises money for guide dogs for the blind and consists of many canoes, paddle boarders etc travelling down the river. This upset many anglers last year as they were not aware of the event.
I believe more information is available on their facebook page.
