I've lure fished on the staffs/worcs canal numerous times although haven't been particularly successful. I've fished around Stourton and Wolverley mainly.

Other than that I havent fished a lot on canals and when I have I've just pulled up skimmers on corn. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of carp or tench fishing on the canal and which areas I would be likely to find them? I don't expect anyone to give up any secret spots! also any tactics and bait used would be very helpful

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Canal carp

I've seen people targetting the carp in the stretches that you are already fishing.
I was commuting from Stourbridge to Kidderminster at the time, and chatting to then indicated that they were fishing it fairly regularly into late evening.

Re: Canal carp

I have never caught carp or tench on the Staffs Worcester, I don't think they are as numerous as in the Birmingham-Worcester. I understand that carp have been prominent casualties in some of the pollutions and fish kills that have affected the canal from time to time, but I suspect that there are still enough to be worth targeting if you can locate them.

I don't think you can entirely rule them out from any of the sections and they almost certainly move between pounds via the locks. I have seen mirror carp in the Watermill length of the canal downstream from Kidderminster centre, and they are present also in the long pound that runs from Falling Sands locks right down to the basin and marina in Stourport. There are reputedly large carp in the marina complex in Stourport but I don't think you can fish there unless you can befriend one of the waterside apartment owners. Further upstream, the Botterham to Swindon sections have a few carp, I remember being surprised to see one surfacing in my peg in the middle of a snowstorm one January as I cowered beneath my brolly.

Look for areas where the canal is wider or where there are far-bank reedbeds or other thick cover, walking the canal early morning or evening in summer might help pinpoint where they are.

Best of luck, sounds like a worthwhile challenge

Re: Canal carp

I guess there are a few carp on most stretches of the staffsworc, by far the best stretch in my opinion is hinksford.....there are a lot! Remember having a tench there about 35years ago and the carp were there then too, always getting smashed up on Bayer 1.7 when fishing caster up the shelf.
Walk the stretch when it's hot you'll see them, getting them out is another problem good luck!

Re: Canal carp

Having caught a few Carp on the Dudley & Stourbridge canals, the Shroppy & B'ham Worcester too (never the Staffs Worcs sadly), whether accidentally hooked on light pole tackle or intentionally hooked on heavier rod tackle, the only way to get them out is to follow them when they first bolt off, remembering to grab your landing net too. They don't sprint for long, and so long as they haven't buried themselves in a snag under the far bank, you'll find it easier to bring them to the net once they've tired themselves out.

As for bait is concerned, laying on with bread flake on a lift float rig is as good a method as any. They are just as likely to be feeding in the boat swim or even under your feet. My step daughter lost her whip to a carp at Stoke Prior many years ago when she was only 6 or 7 years old. It was a hot evening, she was bored fishing the inside margin for the occasional roach, so she sat on the tow path and dangled her feet in the water only inches away from her float. Whoops. The whip went water skiing across to the far bank & the faster we ran after it, the faster the carp swam away from us. The whip finally ended up buried in the reeds on the far bank.

Happy days.smiling

Re: Canal carp - Fazeley Canal

There were / are Carp to be caught on the Fazeley cut.

Walking back from the Drayton Manor Swivel Bridge towards Brum and before the next Drayton Manor foot bridge.

I stopped and spoke to a Specialist Carp angler that had been fishing for them with some success.
It was in the summer so the days were long.
So I went back to where he had been fishing a week later for an evening session.
I float fished the far bank under some bushes with sweet corn as bait using 5lb line and a size 12 hook and I had a couple of common carp myself not very big about four to five pounds.
They were my first ever Carp!
Only Five days to go to the River Season
Keep on Fishing.
