Vintage Fishing Tackle

Having started fishing again after a forty year gap I am using a set of 14' Sealey Blue Match Special Match Rods I bought in 1972/3 I also use a set of Slapton Apollo steel rods from the 1950's / 1960's for ledgering I have caught Barbel Bream and Chub on the latter, the Sealeys I use for all my river float fishing. I have purchased a lot of new tackle but most of it to be honest is plastic and rubbish. I have bought a lot of second hand tackle from the 70's / 80's for no money and the build quality is excellent. I sold a lot of my dads vintage rods and reels ( ABU & Mitchel ) and I wish I had kept them. Is anyone else still using very old tackle and getting good catches ?

Re: 20lb pike

I’m going to say Stacklands. I have been fishing / walking that stretch of water since the mid sixties and I have seen some monsters in that stretch. Some on the opposite bank to the BAA stretch. My dads saw one easily I. excess of 20 lb and I have seen a few 15lb and over.

Re: stacklands

I float fished it a few weeks ago. Small pieces of meat fed over milled casters and white crumb bought me 30 plus chub and 30 plus small 6-10oz Barbel. The Wye is the best river you will ever float fish. Don’t waste your time on feeders.

Re: Re: River venues car access

I had a long chat with the farmers wife. A really nice lady. Yes they do have issues with the BAA she made no bones about it. But also they have a big problem with poachers. The local gillie had a knife pulled on him by a couple of east Europeans who were caught taking fish out of the meadows a coded lock on the gate would benefit both the BAA members and the farmer. But I also believe the farmer is resentful that they lost the fishing rights and will never be happy about having to share the meadows.
