Re: Cotheridge

I spoke to John Williams about this issue last week as it is close to my heart as well - hope he doesn't mind me posting some info on here.
The main issue is the land owner in question is very frail and elderly and not well, and although the gypsies are effectively trespassing they claim they have permission to be there, and the owner obviously has other priorities at present being seriously ill. And so the situation with the current approach track is unlikely to change soon. John and the team have been investigating other means of access but nothing will probably be done until the close season.
So I guess we'll have to see what happens - here's hoping we get access back this season.
Of course we have access to the river still, it is just awkward finding somewhere to park the car and it is a long walk - I know I have done it a few times - and it is a bit scary going past the burnt out cars and barking dogs on chains.

Re: Holt fleet

I agree with your views on the parking - I have had similar experiences. You park up and then the lad comes onto the island to ask for your money - the first time I didn't have any money with me so didn't pay. It costs £5 to park there, which I resent as I have already paid for my fishing - interestingly if you fish the farmer's own stretch he only charges £3 to fish which includes parking! So feels like extortion to me. Shame as it is a good fishery, and if I go now I get someone to drop me down there and pick me up but I don't live far away - that won't work for most. Not much the BAA can do I guess.

Re: Cotheridge

Fished Cotheridge yesterday late afternoon and till dark - I was the only one there, as you might expect. Had a nice barbel about 5.5 lbs and a small chub. River was very low, so not bad results considering I was only there 3 hours. The guy in the caravan now has two noisy dogs - one of which was off the chain when I came back past - didn't bite me though, just a bit scary when it comes up to you barking. Don't think I'll fish it again this year - the walk down there is ok but the hassle isn't worth it.

Re: Cotheridge

Interestingly it is in theory possible to fish the bit of river I like from the opposite bank accessed from the Ox Bow fishery, but access is, as they state 'only for the intrepid angler'. I guess I fall under that category but I'm not clear if we can actually drive there as the car park is described as 'not maintained' - does this mean a tractor can drive over your car as they see fit? The access was certainly very bumpy when I last went down there and if I had a 4x4 that would fair better than my estate car.
Might try it again but maybe a mountain bike would offer easier access.
Similarly there is an access road to the other side off the A44 that runs right down to the river but I guess a farmer owns that. That would be a better bet though, if we could switch access to that track. See attached. Maybe I'll email JW to see what he says.

Re: Cotheridge

I have fished it twice this season. First time soon after it opened and caught a 7lb barbel first cast plus some nice chub. Second time about 4 weeks ago. The river was very low but still extracted 2 barbel to 6.5 lb and three chub to 3 lb. There were a couple of other members there but no one else and the swims very overgrown as you'd expect. I had to park elsewhere, travel very light and hike all the way down there - a bit nerve racking walking past the encampment of caravan, rubbish, old cars and rather noisy dog, but figure I can look after myself and JW has confirmed we still have the fishing rights - we just can't park there. Might try again once the river is up a bit.
Would be nice if some new access could be arranged but at least the river is fishing well with virtually zero fishing pressure.
