Re: R.Wye Stacklands

Stacklands has every course fish you would expect to find in the Wye, Roach, Dace, Chub, Barbel, Pike, Perch (rumours of a large river carp but thats all they are, rumours....) There are also Salmon to be caught (providing you have the necessary licence!) Of the three fields the upper parts of the beat are a lot lower and faster but very much clogged with weed at the moment, the river deepens further down stream and salmon Croys create deep pools.

Stacklands is a hard place to fish and has lots of snags, please tackle up accordingly! I aways say the best time to fish the Wye is 5-9 then 5 til 9, especially in the summer. As I posted further above the river is in very poor condition at the moment due to the dry spell but September, with a bit of water on, you wont find much better fishing on the Wye. Good luck!

The River Wye (Stacklands)

The current river level is at .20m and the water temperature at 74 degrees.

Oxygen levels are really low.

How do I put this? I dont want to sound like I'm preaching, but I PERSONALLY would not fish for Barbel in these conditions. It is simply not fair on the fish. I'd implore everyone to have a serious think before heading to the river at the moment, at least until we've had a bit of rain to flush it through.

Like I said its absolutely a personal choice but fish care for me is paramount in fishing.

Re: River wye

Hi,

Yep, you can fish for salmon at Stacklands. Season on the wye starts 3rd March. We’ll (myself and Glynn the bailiffs) be there most if not every day to help and advise if required. The EA will visit so be sure to sort out your migratory fish licence. As previously mentioned the wye is strictly catch and release, try and unhook in the water if you can. Spinning and fly is fine although no spinning after 1st August. worming, prawns, a strict no no with very heavy fines. Trebles and barbs are CURRENTLY still allowed although as mentioned there is a proposal that will more than likely go through to ban them, keep an eye on the NRW website for more details.

Spring fish are rare but big, angry and aggressive, tackle up accordingly. Stacklands is one big snag so bring plenty of kit if spinning, braid is my preference there due to the snags.

Good luck, hope to see you on the bank.

Re: The wye

Plenty of Pike on the beat. Couple of Otters too. I'd suggest that the track in the field is a bit damp to drive on (its been underwater) so would recommend parking outside the gate (please dont block the entrance however)
