Re: Barton

Agreed, in many ways Fladbury is almost akin to a commercial fishery with the amount of attention it recieves.

Which is the prime reason I want to find some less busy stretches! Don't get me wrong I like Fladbury and have had plenty of success there, and I do find that the barbel are catchable - occasionally rather than frequently - in low and clear conditions using long hooklengths (the lower visibility the better without going silly on breaking strain) and smallish baits, eg. 8mm pellet (this has been working for me on the mid-Severn this season as well). It is obvious that lots of bait goes in at Fladbury as I've not had to do any pre-baiting whatsoever and have often found myself into fish within 10-15 minutes.

Living in Worcester, I'll be exploring stretches like Pershore, Lower and Upper Moor, Charlton, Cropthorne and the like as well as Barton.

Re: Barton

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I might just explore a few different stretches in that case. Funnily enough I've never fished Fladbury weir but have had plenty of barbel from the rest of the stretch. Cheers and tight lines all!

Barton

Hi all, I'm looking to wean myself off Fladbury for my Avon barbel fishing and I'm wondering whether Barton is worth a go... without going into explicit detail of swims, approach etc. (I'm happy to work this out for myself), anyone have any experiences of this stretch they might care to share? Thanks in advance. smiling

Re: Fish welfare

It's not just barbel that benefit from proper fish care. Any fish that's big enough to be laid down to unhook should have a mat underneath them. I don't discriminate; barbel, carp, tench, bream, chub, whatever, they all get the same treatment from me.

Re: Pikeman do zander for my lads

Pikeman there are definitely zander at Fladbury - saw one about 2 - 3lbs-ish launch itself at a shoal of bleak the other day, came 2ft clear of the water which made positive identification very easy.

There's also a heck of a lot of pike; it's almost impossible to fish for silvers when the water's clear as they are continually being grabbed off the hook by the local esox... I also had a good low double watch my every move as I was resting a barbel prior to release; didn't fear for the fish, it was big enough not to be lunch, but I was worried about my fingers...!
