Re: First barbel trip advice

Thanks for all the advice. Ended up at Stacklands on the Wye, plenty of space. What a cracking stretch of river. Had 3 this evening, largest was 8lb 4oz. The largest gave me one hell of a scrap. Swans, salmon jumping, trout feeding, pergrine falcons all add to a cracking evening.

One point of note though is watch the padlock. I noticed on the forums that other people said to move the chain over the gate as it was suspect. This worked fine when i got there but when i left someone else had obviously not got this message, had got the lock open and then adjusted the chain to make it almost impossible to get off. The code would not work and the lock seized up for me. Manged with some effort to get the chain over the post! Will email head office tomorrow, they need to get this sorted as I nearly had to camp in the fields for the night!!!

Re: First barbel trip advice

Thanks. Thought Arley and Trimply were more middle Severn though?

Took a walk up Severn Stoke today. Its pretty deep water and plenty if big tree cover and bushes but not what I would say is a classic barbel beat though.

First barbel trip advice

Looking for some advice on where to go on my first barbel trip this week or next. Looking to go mid week. I am based in Gloucestershire so the River Wye (stacklands), middle Severn and Warwickshire Avon are all options. I appreciate that the weather and river levels will make things tricky so looking to fish afternoon to dusk. Some advice on a good beat for a barbel beginner appreciated (have fished rivers before but not for barbel).
Thanks
JD

Re: Quieter Avon stretch

Thanks for all the replies. Will give Bidford and Marcliffe a Try. Wasperton sounds good but wrong end of the avon for me being based in Gloucestershire. Someone also mentioned Salford Prior but avoid Cleeve Prior due to a nearby traveller camp that can cause trouble.

Quieter Avon stretch

Can anyone recommend a quiet stretch of the Avon for chub and perhaps the odd barbel? Went to fladbury last Thursday and the mill section was so busy I had to fish on stretch below the bridge which was still busy. I am pretty new to the rivers so any advice is welcome.
